As a VIM Process Engineering Intern, you’ll work directly with Operations and Engineering teams in ATI’s Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) area to improve process consistency, quality, and furnace performance. You’ll apply your engineering and materials science knowledge to hands-on projects involving nickel melting technologies, process optimization, and furnace operations.\nWhat You’ll Work On\nDepending on your project assignment, you may:\nPartner with the Operations team to create visual standards for quality metrics on the VIM shop floor.\nUpdate the VIM Can-Up MIS to optimize the sequence of elemental additions using thermodynamic and chemical modeling.\nConduct refractory trials for new suppliers and document VIM furnace liner health to support furnace performance and reliability.\nAnalyze process information to identify opportunities to improve melt quality and consistency.\nSupport the development and documentation of standard operating procedures for VIM processes.\nPartner with Operations and Engineering teams to investigate process conditions and develop practical solutions.\nWhat You’ll Gain\nHands-on experience with Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) and nickel melting technologies.\nPractical experience applying materials science principles, thermodynamic concepts, and chemical modeling to manufacturing processes.\nExperience with data analysis, process optimization, and problem solving in a production environment.\nExposure to refractory materials, furnace liner health, and furnace performance.\nExperience developing visual standards and standard operating procedures that improve quality consistency and execution.\nOpportunities to work directly with Operations and Engineering teams on projects that deliver measurable impact to the VIM area.\nExperience conducting investigative failure analysis and process improvement in a manufacturing environment.\nPotential opportunity to transition into a full-time Process Engineer position at ATI after graduation.\nPreferred Qualifications\nB.S. or Graduate candidate in:\nMaterials Science & Engineering\nMechanical Engineering\nMetallurgical Engineering\nIndustrial or Manufacturing Engineering\nGPA of 3.0+ (preferred)\nStrong interest in thermo-mechanical processing of metals\nFamiliarity with:\nExcel, Python, or Minitab/JMP for data analysis\nStress-strain behavior, microstructure-property relationships, and process modeling\nAbility to work in plant and shop-floor environments\nWethrive when the expectations are great, and the barriers are high.
