What you’ll accomplish with us
As Legal Counsel, Transversal Affairs - Employment, reporting to the Assistant Director, Transversal Affairs - Employment, you’ll serve as a trusted advisor and be at the core of our mission. Here are the main responsibilities:
- Provide practical, and risk-based legal advice on a wide range of employment matters, including labour and employment standards, occupational health and safety, human rights and accommodation, pay equity, recruitment, performance management, workplace investigations, terminations, reorganizations, diversity, equity and inclusion, and other workplace-related matters.
- Manage legal matters involving varying degrees of complexity, sensitivity, and risk.
- Draft, review, and enhance policies, procedures, templates, and governance tools related to the employment lifecycle, including recruitment, background screening, employee relations, investigations, accommodations, performance management, and terminations.
- Support, design and deliver legal training and educational programs for leaders, human resources professionals, and members of the distribution network to strengthen legal awareness, compliance, and risk management practices.
- Represent iA Financial Group in industry associations, working groups, and external forums, while fostering relationships with key market players and staying up to date on recent developments in workplace and employment law.
- Monitor legislative, regulatory, and jurisprudential developments across applicable jurisdictions, assess their impact on the organization, and provide proactive recommendations that support compliance and business objectives.
- Work in close collaboration with the Assistant Director and the other Employment Legal Counsels of the Transversal Affairs team.
- Contribute to the growth and development of the Legal Services team through knowledge sharing and participation in internal committees and strategic initiatives.
- Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance legal service delivery, streamline processes, optimize resources, and strengthen collaboration with internal business partners.

We’re looking for someone who:
- Is recognized for their expertise in employment and labour law, including employment standards, occupational health and safety, human rights, accommodation, workplace investigations, and employee relations.
- Demonstrates excellent judgment and the ability to provide practical, risk-based legal advice aligned with business objectives.
- Stands out for their negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills, enabling them to influence and collaborate effectively with leaders, HR partners, and key stakeholders.
- Is known for their ability to manage complex and sensitive matters with professionalism, discretion, and sound decision-making.
- Excels at translating complex legal concepts into clear, practical guidance for a variety of audiences.
- Has 6 to 10 years of relevant experience in employment and workplace law.
- Holds a Law Degree (LLB or JD) and is a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario. Membership in another provincial bar is considered an asset.
- Demonstrates agility, initiative, and a strong client-service orientation while balancing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Is comfortable working in a continuous improvement environment and leveraging technology to enhance efficiency and service delivery.
- Advanced level of English proficiency required, as the incumbent will be expected to collaborate both verbally and in writing with unilingual English-speaking partners on a daily basis.

The typical hiring range for this position is between 120 000$ and 170 000$ CAD per year; the base salary offered may vary depending on knowledge, skills, years of experience, and internal equity related to the role.
