This role requires strong hands-on experience with embedded firmware, board-level electronics, and CAN-based communications, with particular emphasis on SAE J1939 and CANopen. The engineer will support new product development, prototype and proof-of-concept work, customer support, and complex troubleshooting across hardware, firmware, and CAN networks. This position will also serve as a key technical resource for transferring existing embedded and CAN knowledge into OTTO's future technology organization.\nThe Embedded Systems Engineer will:\nDesign and develop embedded electronic and firmware systems for new and existing products.\nDevelop embedded firmware primarily in C and C++.\nDesign, implement, and troubleshoot CAN communications, including SAE J1939 and CANopen.\nAnalyze CAN traffic, message timing, network behavior, and customer integration issues using CAN diagnostic tools.\nDevelop and support board-level electronics, including schematics, PCB/PCBA design, processor selection, and prototyping.\nDebug complex issues across hardware, firmware, communications, and customer systems.\nSupport new product development from concept and prototype through validation and production release.\nDevelop proof-of-concept systems and technology demonstrations for future products, customers, and trade shows.\nServe as a technical resource for customer CAN issues and coordinate with external software development partners when required.\nDocument key system architecture, CAN implementation details, design decisions, and troubleshooting methods; mentor less-experienced engineers as needed.\nAssists with other related duties as required or assigned.\nAbout you - What you’ll bring to the table:\nBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline.\n5-10 years of embedded systems engineering experience with demonstrated senior-level technical responsibility.\nStrong hands-on embedded C and C++ development experience.\nExtensive hands-on CAN experience is required.\nStrong practical experience with SAE J1939 and CANopen is required or strongly preferred.\nDemonstrated ability to troubleshoot CAN networks using protocol analyzers, bus traces, diagnostic tools, and embedded debuggers.\nStrong understanding of embedded electronics and hardware/software integration, including the ability to read and review schematics.\nExperience with PCB/PCBA development, microcontrollers/processors, and hardware debugging.\nExperience developing embedded products from architecture through production release.\nStrong system-level troubleshooting, communication, and customer-facing problem-solving skills.\nWhat OTTO offers for this specific position:\nThe hiring range listed in this posting is what we, in good faith, anticipate relying on when confirming a base salary for this position; exceptions may be considered for highly experienced candidates with multiple years of at-level experience.\n· Target base salary hiring range: $90,000 to $115,000, based on qualifications and experience.\n· Profit Sharing Bonus - OTTO believes that it’s fair to share the profits that the employees help to make; profit sharing is distributed to employees twice a year.
