About the role

As an experienced Field Engineer on the Field Operations team, you will serve as the technical bridge between Engineering and the field, translating engineering intent into safe, practical, and executable field work. You will provide technical leadership for equipment installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and modification at Aalo facilities and other project locations, including Aalo-0, Aalo-X, and reactor deployment sites.

This is a hands-on role. You will work alongside field personnel, resolve technical issues at the point of execution, and own the producibility and field-readiness of assigned work. Success depends on combining disciplined engineering judgment with practical execution, clear communication, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to advance Field Operations and Aalo as a whole.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate, and support the installation, commissioning, testing, operation, maintenance, repair, and modification of mechanical equipment, machinery, and integrated systems.
• Review and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, schematics, procedures, work instructions, vendor documentation, and acceptance criteria before and during field execution.
• Translate design requirements into practical work plans, task sequencing, tooling needs, material requirements, inspection points, and field-ready instructions.
• Provide direct technical support to Field Operations personnel, craft workers, vendors, and project teams during field activities.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve equipment, installation, fabrication, alignment, fit-up, interface, and performance issues encountered in the field.
• Verify field conditions, collect measurements and technical data, document discrepancies, and communicate conditions that may affect design intent, safety, quality, schedule, or operability.
• Support inspections, functional testing, diagnostics, performance verification, turnover, and closeout activities; document results and outstanding items.
• Coordinate with design engineering, manufacturing, quality, licensing, construction, testing, and reactor operations to keep design intent and field execution aligned.
• Support the development and revision of field procedures, work packages, work instructions, lift plans, test plans, technical reports, redlines, punch lists, and as-built documentation.
• Manage technical questions through the appropriate review and approval process, and ensure unauthorized field changes are not incorporated into the work.
• Lead or support pre-job briefs, task walkdowns, hazard reviews, readiness reviews, and post-job critiques for assigned activities.
• Provide technical direction and mentoring to field personnel while respecting established supervisory, quality, and work-control responsibilities.
• Travel to company facilities, vendor locations, construction sites, and test sites, including on short notice when operational needs require.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Manufacturing Engineering (or a closely related field), OR equivalent hands-on field/technical experience.
• 10+ years of field engineering, installation, commissioning, or comparable hands-on hardware experience.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, GD&T callouts, weld symbols, schematics, and specifications.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and sound engineering judgment, with the ability to solve real-world problems safely at the point of execution.
• Basic familiarity with powered and manual tools.
• Strong ownership mindset and clear communication; comfortable working with ambiguity in a fast-iterating environment.
• Air-travel-compliant form of ID and a valid Driver's License.

Preferred Experience

• Experience in nuclear, aerospace, defense, semiconductor, or other high-reliability regulated industries.
• Hands-on skills in one or more of: welding, machining, assembly, rigging, or field inspection.
• Experience with commissioning, functional testing, and turnover of mechanical systems.
• Familiarity with configuration control, work-control processes, and as-built documentation.
• Heavy equipment or material-handling equipment operation experience.
• Experience supporting on-site installation and commissioning across multiple project locations.

Physical Requirements

• Comfortable working on the factory floor and in industrial, construction, and remote field environments alongside technicians, welders, and operators.
• Physically fit for duty - capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and standing, climbing ladders, and working for extended periods while wearing PPE.
• Willingness to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather or environmental conditions when trained and authorized.
• Willingness to perform hands-on field and assembly work.

Requirements

• Must be based in the United States.
• Must be willing to work on-site at our headquarters in Austin, Texas.
• Able to travel (at Aalo's expense) to out-of-state locations in the continental U.S., including on short notice and for extended assignments.
