This position serves as a technical leader on the assigned shift, supporting safe equipment operation, minimizing unplanned downtime, improving equipment reliability, and developing the skills of other maintenance technicians.\nThe Senior Maintenance Technician works closely with Production, Process Engineering, Maintenance Leadership, and other support teams to identify root causes, implement permanent corrective actions, and ensure preventive and predictive maintenance activities are completed effectively. This position also helps maintain consistent maintenance standards and production support across all four shifts.\nKey responsibilities\n1. Safety and compliance\nFollow all ABB safety policies, procedures, and applicable environmental, health, and safety requirements.\nApply lockout/tagout (LOTO), electrical safety practices, and other required safe-work procedures.\nIdentify and correct unsafe equipment conditions before returning equipment to production.\nPromote a safety-first culture and hold team members accountable for safe work practices.\nEnsure maintenance activities meet applicable quality and operational standards.\n2. Technical troubleshooting and repairs\nDiagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automated production equipment.\nTroubleshoot PLC-controlled equipment, sensors, drives, control circuits, and industrial automation systems within the technician’s training and authorization.\nRespond to production breakdowns and prioritize repairs based on safety, equipment risk, and production impact.\nPerform root-cause analysis on recurring equipment failures and implement permanent corrective actions.\nSupport equipment startups, changeovers, adjustments, and production line recovery.\nEscalate programming, engineering, or specialized technical issues when they exceed the position’s authorization or expertise.\n3. Preventive and predictive maintenance\nExecute and support preventive and predictive maintenance activities.\nEnsure maintenance work orders are completed accurately and on time in the CMMS.\nIdentify equipment deterioration and recommend repairs before failures occur.\nMaintain equipment condition, tooling, sensors, safety devices, and critical components.\nReview maintenance history and identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability and PM effectiveness.\n4. Shift leadership and production support\nServe as the senior technical resource for the assigned shift.\nCoordinate maintenance response to production calls and communicate priorities to the maintenance team.\nSupport production technicians and operators in identifying equipment problems and restoring equipment safely.\nCommunicate major breakdowns, equipment risks, outstanding work orders, and unresolved issues during shift handovers.\nCoordinate with other senior technicians to ensure consistent troubleshooting practices and continuity across A, B, C, and D shifts.\nSupport maintenance priorities while balancing emergency repairs, planned work, and continuous improvement projects.\n5. Training and technician development\nTrain and mentor Maintenance Technician I and II employees.\nDevelop technician capabilities through hands-on instruction, troubleshooting exercises, and cross-training across production lines.\nReinforce proper repair methods, safe work practices, and CMMS documentation standards.\nShare technical knowledge with other shifts to reduce dependency on individual employees.\nIdentify skill gaps and recommend training plans to the Maintenance Manager.\n6. Continuous improvement and accountability\nIdentify recurring downtime, equipment reliability issues, and opportunities to improve production performance.\nWork with Process Engineering and Production to implement equipment improvements.\nSupport reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), root-cause analysis, and standard maintenance practices.\nMaintain an organized work area and ensure tools, spare parts, and maintenance equipment are properly managed.\nTrack assigned work and follow through until corrective actions are completed and verified.\nABB core values\nThe Senior Maintenance Technician is expected to demonstrate ABB’s core values through daily decisions, technical leadership, and interactions with employees and production teams.\nCourage\nTake ownership of difficult equipment problems, speak up about safety concerns, challenge recurring failures, and make responsible decisions even under production pressure.\nCare\nPut safety first, protect employees and equipment, respect coworkers, maintain quality standards, and consider the impact of maintenance decisions on customers and production.\nCuriosity\nContinuously learn new technologies, investigate root causes instead of relying on temporary fixes, explore better maintenance methods, and develop technical skills across production equipment.\nCollaboration\nWork effectively with Production, Engineering, Quality, HSE, and Maintenance teams. Share knowledge across all four shifts and help others succeed through coaching, communication, and teamwork.\nMinimum qualifications\nAssociates degree preferred or technical certification.\nTypically Seven or more years of industrial maintenance experience, with demonstrated advanced troubleshooting capability.\nStrong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.\nExperience with industrial automation, PLC diagnostics, sensors, drives, and control systems preferred.\nExperience performing preventive and corrective maintenance in a manufacturing environment.\nAbility to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and equipment manuals.\nExperience using a CMMS to document work orders, maintenance history, and parts usage.\nDemonstrated ability to mentor technicians and coordinate technical work.\nAbility to work the assigned shift and support production requirements.\nPerformance expectations and KPIs\nPerformance should be measured using established site targets and documented results, including:\nSafety compliance and completion of required safety training.\nPreventive maintenance compliance.\nWork-order completion and documentation accuracy.\nProduction downtime and mean time to repair (MTTR).\nRepeat equipment failures and effectiveness of corrective actions.\nCMMS work-order quality and timely shift handovers.\nTechnician cross-training and demonstrated skill development.\nCompletion of assigned continuous improvement and reliability projects.\nDecision-making and accountability\nThe Senior Maintenance Technician is expected to independently diagnose and repair equipment within their qualifications and authorization, determine appropriate repair priorities, and escalate safety-critical conditions or issues requiring engineering support. The role provides technical leadership but does not replace the Maintenance Manager’s responsibility for staffing, performance management, and overall maintenance strategy.\nExpected outcome\nThe Senior Maintenance Technician will provide dependable technical leadership on the assigned shift, improve equipment reliability, reduce avoidable downtime, strengthen preventive maintenance execution, and develop a more capable, cross-trained maintenance workforce across all four shifts.\nImplementation note: This job description is written to reflect ABB’s four core values-Courage, Care, Curiosity, and Collaboration.
