The Senior Database Specialist is responsible for designing, optimizing, and ensuring the reliability, performance, scalability, and security of enterprise database platforms. This role leads complex database engineering initiatives, establishes technical standards and best practices, drives automation and modernization efforts, and partners with business and technology stakeholders to deliver robust, future-ready data solutions.\nWhat You'll Do\nDesign and implement scalable, resilient, and highly available database architectures.\n\nLead High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) initiatives, including Always On, clustering, and replication solutions.\n\nDefine and enforce database governance standards, best practices, and operational procedures.\n\nDrive database modernization initiatives, including cloud migrations and platform upgrades.\n\nLead enterprise database performance strategies, including advanced query tuning, workload optimization, and indexing strategies.\n\nProactively identify and resolve systemic database performance issues.\n\nDevelop automation solutions using PowerShell, T-SQL, and other scripting technologies.\n\nEnable CI/CD integration and support DevOps practices for database deployments.\n\nReduce operational effort through automation, self-service capabilities, and process improvements.\n\nAlign database platforms with enterprise data architecture and business strategies.\n\nSupport integrations with analytics, reporting, and AI/ML platforms.\n\nLead resolution of critical database incidents and perform deep root cause analysis.\n\nImplement proactive monitoring, alerting, and reliability strategies.\n\nEnsure compliance with security standards, data governance requirements, and applicable regulations.\n\nPartner with architects, application teams, infrastructure teams, and business stakeholders to deliver technical solutions aligned with business needs.\n\nMentor team members and contribute to technical leadership, roadmap planning, and strategic initiatives.\n\nRequired Qualifications\nBachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related field.\n\n7+ years of progressive experience in SQL Server database engineering and administration.\n\nProven experience supporting enterprise database platforms and complex production environments.\n\nDemonstrated experience leading complex database initiatives such as migrations, HA/DR implementations, and performance optimization programs.\n\nDeep expertise in Microsoft SQL Server architecture, administration, and database internals.\n\nAdvanced knowledge of High Availability and Disaster Recovery technologies, including Always On, clustering, and replication.\n\nAdvanced experience in database performance tuning, query optimization, and indexing strategies.\n\nStrong experience with backup, recovery, and data protection strategies.\n\nExperience developing automation solutions using PowerShell and T-SQL.\n\nStrong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and technical leadership skills.\n\nExperience collaborating with cross-functional global teams and stakeholders.\n\nAdvanced English proficiency (written and verbal), with the ability to effectively communicate with global stakeholders.\n\nWork Model: Hybrid (4 days onsite, 1 day remote)\n\nPreferred Qualifications\nMicrosoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300).\n\nMicrosoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305).\n\nMicrosoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400).\n\nMicrosoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203).\n\nExperience with Azure SQL, Azure Managed Instance, AWS RDS, or other cloud database platforms.\n\nExperience working in regulated environments such as healthcare, life sciences, or GxP environments.\n\nKnowledge of data governance, data integrity (ALCOA+), and compliance frameworks.\n\nExperience with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code practices.\n\nITIL, CISSP, or TOGAF certifications are a plus\n\nApply now\nFollow your career aspirations to Abbott for diverse opportunities with a company that can help you build your future and live your best life.
