Supporting a growing network of 40+ practices, AD operates like a high-standards professional services model for dentistry, bringing disciplined financial management, data-driven decision-making, repeatable playbooks, and trusted partnership to practice leaders.\nTeam Description\nThe Finance & Accounting team provides the financial visibility, rigor, and partnership needed for practice-level performance. We do more than record transactions, we partner with practice leaders and AD operators to understand what is happening in the business, why it is happening, and what to do next. This role is a core part of AD’s service offering to supported practices, translating accounting into actionable operational and financial decisions.\nPosition Overview\nThe Portfolio Controller is responsible for providing financial leadership to a portfolio of dental practices. You will own the financial “story” of your practices: ensuring accurate accounting, producing clear performance reporting, identifying trends and risks, and partnering with operations and practice leadership on initiatives that improve profitability, cash flow, and scalability.\nThis role blends accounting fundamentals (month-end close, reconciliations, reporting) with finance/business partnering (analysis, recommendations, performance management). The ideal candidate is organized, analytically strong, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced, multi-location environment.\nWhat You Will Own\nOwn month-end close and balance sheet integrity for a portfolio of practices.\nLead monthly financial reviews with doctors and practice leaders; drive narrative and recommendations.\nOwn KPI reporting, driver-based variance analysis, and performance insights\nStandardize templates, controls, and reporting routines across practices.\nCore Responsibilities\nPortfolio Month-end Close\nLead monthly close activities for assigned practices including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and financial statement integrity.\nMaintain clean balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules (cash, accounts receivable, prepaid expenses, accruals, vendor liabilities, and other key accounts).\nEnsure expenses and revenue are accurately classified and consistently reported across practices, including normalization of one-time items and adherence to reporting standards.\nPartner with centralized functions (Operations, RCM, AP, payroll) to provide consistent reporting.\nPractice-Facing Financial Reviews\nProduce and deliver monthly financial packages (P&L, variance analysis, KPI scorecard) with a clear narrative: what happened, why it happened, and what we recommend.\nPresent results to practice staff and partner doctors regularly; align on actions, and follow up on outcomes.\nProvide decision support through credible analysis and recommendations; influence change through clarity and partnership.\nDental Unit Economics and KPI Ownership\nMonitor and diagnose key practice drivers, including:Production vs. collections trends, adjustments, and net collection rate\nAR aging, collection cycle, and leakage points\nProvider and hygiene productivity, capacity utilization, and scheduling effectiveness\nLabor mix and labor percentage controls\nSupplies and lab spend controls (pricing, usage variance, vendor compliance)\nMarketing performance and ROI where applicable\nOverhead discipline and fixed-cost leverage (rent/occupancy)\n\nBuild driver-based variance explanations and identify root causes rather than generic budget-to-actual commentary.\nPerformance Improvement and Standardization Across Practices\nIdentify performance opportunities and support implementation with operations and practice leadership (vendor optimization, staffing models, revenue cycle improvements, recurring expense controls).\nDevelop and scale repeatable playbooks, templates, and KPI definitions to drive consistency across the portfolio.\nSupport onboarding and integration of new practices into AD’s close cadence, policies, and reporting standards as needed.\nControls, Audit, and Stakeholder Support\nMaintain documentation and schedules to support audits, lender reporting, and other internal or external requests.\nStrengthen internal controls in a multi-location environment by proactively flagging risks and recommending solutions.\nWhat Success Looks Like (First 90-180 Days)\nPractice leaders understand performance because reporting is clear, consistent, and action-oriented.\nYou surface meaningful improvement opportunities (cost, collections, staffing, vendor spend) and help drive follow-through.\nYou improve consistency across practices by standardizing templates, definitions, and routines.\nMonth-end close is executed on a disciplined close calendar with clean reconciliations and minimal rework\nRequired Qualifications\nEducation: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.\nExperience:2-6 years of experience in public accounting (audit/assurance) and/or multi-entity accounting/finance roles.\nAccounting:Strong understanding of financial statements, GAAP fundamentals, and month-end close ownership.\nTechnical skills:Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, structured analysis) and comfort working with large datasets.\nCommunication: Strong executive communication skills;
