Accenture’s Supply Chain & Engineering (SC&E) practice is transforming how energy companies design, source, and manage the transportation networks that move products across their value chains.

From integrated oil majors and independent refiners to chemical producers, midstream operators, and commodity traders, our clients rely on complex multi-modal transportation networks (ocean, truck, and rail) and a web of third-party providers including ocean carriers, port operators, terminal managers, freight forwarders, and 3PLs. Getting that network right is a strategic decision with hundreds of millions of dollars in freight spend at stake, and the wrong choices compound across every cargo, every lane, and every contract.

Our Energy clients are looking for senior advisors who understand transportation not just as a cost line but as a strategic capability, one that can be designed, sourced, managed, and continuously optimized to deliver competitive advantage. We help clients build transportation strategies, rationalize carrier and 3PL portfolios, redesign logistics networks, and implement the operating models and technologies that make those strategies real.

If you are passionate about transportation strategy, provider management, and helping the world’s largest energy companies build logistics capabilities that match their commercial ambitions, we’d like to meet you.

The Work

As an Energy Transportation & Logistics Strategy Senior Manager, you will:

Industry & Client Leadership

  • Serve as a trusted strategic advisor to energy clients across upstream, midstream, downstream, chemicals, and commodity trading on transportation network strategy, third-party provider management, and logistics operating model design

  • Help clients define and execute transportation strategies across ocean freight, truck, rail, and intermodal, including make-vs-buy decisions, modal mix optimization, carrier portfolio design, and logistics network restructuring

  • Translate complex transportation challenges (freight cost volatility, carrier capacity constraints, port congestion, 3PL performance failures, and contract misalignment) into clear strategic options with quantified business cases

  • Lead executive workshops, transportation network assessments, provider strategy reviews, and business case development with VP-level and C-suite stakeholders across Supply Chain, Logistics, Commercial, Operations, and Procurement

Transportation Strategy & Network Design

  • Lead transportation network design engagements: modal analysis, lane-level cost modeling, origin-to-destination optimization across ocean, rail, truck, and intermodal, and strategic network restructuring recommendations

  • Develop carrier portfolio strategies that balance cost, capacity, reliability, and risk across ocean carriers, Class I and short-line rail, over-the-road trucking, heavy haul and specialized carriers, and intermodal service providers

  • Advise clients on port and terminal strategy: port selection, berth access and allocation, terminal operator relationships, dwell time reduction, and port congestion mitigation

  • Design freight sourcing strategies and support RFP development, carrier evaluation, contract negotiation, and rate benchmarking across all transportation modes

  • Build freight spend analytics frameworks and transportation benchmarks that give clients visibility into where they are overpaying, underperforming, or exposed

Third-Party Provider Strategy & Management

  • Develop 3PL, ocean carrier, port operator, and terminal provider strategies: scope definition, make-vs-buy analysis, provider segmentation, relationship model design, and performance governance frameworks

  • Design provider management operating models that define roles, responsibilities, performance metrics, escalation paths, and contract structures across the full provider ecosystem

  • Lead 3PL and carrier performance transformation programs: diagnostics, root cause analysis, improvement roadmaps, and governance redesign to convert underperforming provider relationships into competitive advantages

  • Advise on transportation contract strategy: structure, duration, flexibility provisions, performance incentives, volume commitments, and risk-sharing mechanisms across ocean, rail, and truck contracts

  • Support provider selection processes for major transportation and logistics outsourcing decisions, including RFP design, proposal evaluation, and commercial negotiation support

Delivery & Team Leadership

  • Lead consulting teams and transportation strategy programs from diagnostic through implementation, managing quality, timeline, and client relationships across complex multi-workstream engagements

  • Manage senior client stakeholders across Logistics, Procurement, Commercial, and Operations, translating transportation strategy into decisions that those stakeholders can own and execute

  • Mentor and develop Managers and Consultants; build the transportation strategy talent base within the SC&E Energy practice

  • Shape Accenture’s market-facing point of view on energy transportation strategy through published research, industry forums, and client-ready intellectual property

Business Development

  • Own a meaningful portion of the practice’s commercial pipeline; originate, develop, and lead transportation strategy opportunities across the Energy portfolio

  • Leverage your network across logistics and transportation functions at energy companies, ocean carriers, port operators, rail carriers, and 3PL providers to identify and advance commercial opportunities

  • Bring transportation sector credentials, provider ecosystem relationships, and market intelligence into competitive pursuits

  • Drive growth of Accenture’s Energy Transportation & Logistics Strategy practice through account expansion and new client origination

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in transportation strategy, logistics network design, freight sourcing, or third-party provider management across two or more modes: ocean/marine, truck, or rail

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in or advising energy sector clients: upstream, midstream, downstream, chemicals, commodity trading, or adjacent asset-intensive industries

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent (minimum 12 years) work experience. (If associate degree, must have a minimum of 6 years’ work experience)

Bonus Points If You Have

  • Demonstrated commercial track record: experience originating or leading new client engagements in transportation strategy, carrier management, or logistics network design

  • Third-party provider strategy experience: 3PL selection and governance, ocean carrier contract strategy, port operator management, or major transportation outsourcing decisions

  • A track record of delivering transportation strategy, network optimization, carrier management, or logistics operating model programs with clear commercial impact

  • Experience leading senior client or stakeholder engagements across Logistics, Supply Chain, Procurement, and/or Commercial functions

Additional experience we value:

  • Ocean freight: liner shipping dynamics, tanker chartering, freight rate forecasting, port congestion analysis, IMO regulatory impact (MARPOL, CII), and carrier alliance structures

  • Rail: Class I carrier relationships, rail contract structures (confidential contracts, volume incentives), unit train operations, intermodal strategy, and short-line rail integration

  • Truck: over-the-road carrier strategy, dedicated vs. common carrier models, spot vs. contract rate management, heavy haul and specialized transport for energy equipment and materials

  • Port and terminal strategy: port selection criteria, terminal operator evaluation, berth allocation, dwell time and port cost benchmarking, and port congestion mitigation

  • Freight analytics and technology: TMS selection and implementation, freight spend analytics, carrier performance dashboards, control tower design, and digital freight platforms

  • Energy-specific logistics: crude-by-rail, refined products distribution, LNG truck/rail transport, frac sand and oilfield equipment logistics, chemical distribution

  • Logistics contract strategy: RFP design, carrier evaluation scorecards, contract negotiation, rate benchmarking, and fuel surcharge management

  • APICS CLTD, CPIM, or CSCP certification; MBA or advanced degree in supply chain, logistics, or a quantitative field

  • Energy transition logistics: clean fuel distribution, hydrogen logistics, biofuels supply chain, offshore wind marine logistics
