We build technology for investment banks, investment managers, fintechs, and capital markets service providers. Our consulting teams work with clients to implement and extend that technology, but our starting point is product engineering: solving difficult problems and building software that creates lasting competitive advantage.\nWe are hiring a Java Distributed Systems Engineer to help buildAeron Sequencer, our technology for applying state machine replication to capital markets. You will work on distributed systems that enable other engineering teams to build performant, reliable software. This is a hands-on role with the opportunity to influence product decisions, architecture, engineering practices, and how we communicate our work.\nWhat you will do:\nAnalyse, design, discuss, and develop distributed systems based on replicated state machines.\nWrite clean, efficient, maintainable, and self-documenting Java code.\nDesign and evolve messaging protocols and software libraries.\nTroubleshoot and debug Java applications and distributed systems.\nApply testing, benchmarking, measurement, and profiling to improve correctness and performance.\nParticipate in code reviews, pairing, and technical discussions to raise the quality of our work.\nContribute to product decisions, not just task execution.\nKeep up to date with relevant software engineering technologies and practices.\nCommunicate technical decisions and priorities clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.\nWhat you will bring: \nExperience designing, building, debugging, and operating distributed systems.\nStrong experience developing server-side software in Java.\nExperience designing and evolving messaging protocols or software libraries.\nExperience using different forms of testing to support software quality, including correctness and performance.\nExperience measuring, benchmarking, and profiling components or systems.\nStrong written and verbal communication skills.\nA collaborative approach, with a genuine interest in sharing knowledge and learning from others.\nThe judgement to prioritise competing demands based on long-term value and explain those priorities to stakeholders.\nThe confidence to challenge the status quo and suggest improvements, both technical and cultural.\nUseful additional experience:\nYou do not need experience in every area below. It would be valuable if you have worked with one or more of the following:\nMessaging technologies or deterministic, replicated state machines.\nLow-latency, high-throughput, or predictable-performance systems.\nProperty-based testing or deterministic simulation testing.\nFinancial interchange protocols such as FIX or ITCH.\nOMS, EMS, or exchange systems.\nC, C++, or other programming languages.\nBuild tools and engineering automation, such as Gradle or GitHub Actions.\nCloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.\nContainer orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes.\nPre-sales or customer-facing technical discussions.\nBuilding a public technical presence through blogs, conference talks, or external video content.\nWhy Adaptive: \nInteresting engineering problems. Work with passionate engineers on software where correctness, performance, and ease of use matter.\nProduct influence. Help shape technology that is used to solve complex problems in financial markets, rather than simply delivering predefined client requirements.\nCollaborative teams. We share knowledge, learn from one another, respect different perspectives, and contribute wherever help is needed.\nFlexible working. We support a highly flexible, hybrid working model.\nA sustainable pace. Work-life balance is important to us, supported by wellbeing benefits and a focus on long-term performance.\nAn inclusive culture. We aim to create a positive, collaborative environment and support our people and local communities through wellbeing, diversity, and inclusion programmes.\nAdaptive has offices in London, New York, Barcelona, Montreal, and Manila, bringing together a global team with a shared focus on building better financial technology.\nWHAT PEOPLE THINK OF US You can check our Glassdoor page :) \nBENEFITS (What we offer in return // what you’ll get )\nWe create benefits with YOU in mind.\n25 days vacation + 2 additional days off for volunteering activities\nPension plan\nPrivate Health Insurance\nTicket restaurant\nChildcare/Commuting benefits\nWellbeing allowance\nLanguage classes (English and Spanish)\nTHE PROCESS\nLong interview processes are stressful and boring and that is not us \nWe want to make sure that everything runs smoothly.\nSo here you will have three stage interviews:\n1- A chat with one of our great recruiters.\n2- A zoom chat with one of our Java colleagues where they will ask you detailed questions about your experience\n3- A Face to Face interview (either in our office or via Zoom). During this interview, we will dig even deeper and you will have a pair programming task to do.\nBut don’t worry; everything will be explained to you step by step by your recruiter. \nA little tip for you during those stages: \nCollaboration is massively important to us, so don't hesitate to share your thoughts, ask questions, ask for help if needed, etc :) \nDIVERSITY & INCLUSION: \nDiversity and inclusion are key to a great workplace, and Adaptive is better when it’s more representative of the world around us. We want everyone to feel comfortable bringing their whole selves to work without any fear of judgment or negativity. \nAll we ask is that our colleagues are respectful, collaborative, passionate about what they do, and have the skills needed to be successful in their roles.\nBackground check: the employment/engagement is subject to an acceptable background check that will be run by Adaptive","description_format":"text","description_chars":5851,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[{"language":"English","level":"All levels","optional":false}]},"benefits":["Flexible schedule","Health insurance","Hybrid work"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"},{"name":"Spain","iso":"ES","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Financial Services","Financial Software & Embedded Finance","Custom Software Development"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-02T21:31:53Z"}],"liveness":{"score":86,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.86,"p_room":1,"age_days":0,"expected_fill_days":30,"reasons":["conf:6","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-10-03T04:02:54Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/adaptive-financial-consulting-java-distributed-systems-engineer-barcelona-fintech","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/adaptive-financial-consulting-java-distributed-systems-engineer-barcelona-fintech.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-03T04:02:54Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":4081,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":919,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-10-04T00:00:00Z"}}}
