AECOM is an American infrastructure consulting firm that became independent in 1990 through a management buyout from the energy group Ashland, and is now one of the largest design and engineering organisations in the world. It plans, designs and manages delivery of transport systems, water and wastewater infrastructure, buildings, environmental remediation and energy projects for public agencies and private developers across roughly one hundred and fifty countries. Headquartered in Dallas after relocating from Los Angeles, the company sold its self-perform construction and government services arms to concentrate on higher-margin professional services rather than carrying construction risk.

Come grow with us.

At AECOM, we're delivering a better world through innovative engineering and design. Our Buildings + Places team partners with clients to shape the future of the built environment, delivering complex and iconic projects that make a lasting impact across New Zealand and around the globe.

We're one global team driven by our common purpose to deliver a better world. Join us.

As Associate Director - Team Leader | Building Structures, you'll have the opportunity to influence the future of AECOM’s structural engineering business while working on some of New Zealand’s most exciting and technically challenging projects. This is more than a technical leadership role - it’s a chance to shape strategy, grow key client partnerships, mentor high-performing teams, and play a pivotal role in the continued success of our Structures practice.

Working closely with the National Structures Lead, you'll help drive strategic initiatives and operational excellence while positioning yourself as a future leader within the business. With a clear pathway from Auckland Team Lead to ultimately Director, you'll be supported by senior mentors and backed by dedicated bid and market teams, allowing you to focus on what you do best: delivering exceptional outcomes and building lasting client relationships.

In this role, you will:

  • Support the National Structures Lead in delivering strategic initiatives and operational excellence across the practice.
  • Lead the delivery of complex structural engineering projects, ensuring high-quality technical outcomes across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentor engineers, fostering capability development and collaboration.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with key clients, taking account lead responsibility for select priority accounts.
  • Contribute to business development activities, pursuits, proposals, and thought leadership initiatives.
  • Champion innovation, digital engineering, and efficient delivery methods that improve quality and client value.
  • Collaborate across New Zealand, Australia, and AECOM’s global network to deliver best-in-class solutions.
  • Progress along a clearly defined pathway to Director, supported by transparent milestones and senior leadership sponsorship.

We're looking for an ambitious and technically accomplished structural engineer who's ready to broaden their impact beyond projects and into people, clients, and business leadership. Experience across healthcare and aviation sectors is highly valued, with mission-critical projects considered a significant advantage.

  • A Bachelor's degree in Structural or Civil Engineering.
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status or eligibility.
  • Strong experience delivering complex structural engineering projects within a consulting environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and a passion for mentoring and developing others.
  • The ability to build trusted client relationships and contribute to business growth.
  • Commercial awareness and experience supporting proposals, pursuits, or strategic initiatives.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • A collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for innovation, digital delivery, and continuous improvement.
  • A genuine desire to step into a broader leadership role with a clear pathway for progression.

Why you’ll love working with us

  • Flexible work arrangements, including alternative start/finish times and hybrid work options
  • Purchase up to 6 weeks additional annual leave per year
  • Volunteer and representation leave
  • Flex public holidays - swap Easter or other holidays for ones that suit you better
