AECOM is an American infrastructure consulting firm that became independent in 1990 through a management buyout from the energy group Ashland, and is now one of the largest design and engineering organisations in the world. It plans, designs and manages delivery of transport systems, water and wastewater infrastructure, buildings, environmental remediation and energy projects for public agencies and private developers across roughly one hundred and fifty countries. Headquartered in Dallas after relocating from Los Angeles, the company sold its self-perform construction and government services arms to concentrate on higher-margin professional services rather than carrying construction risk.

AECOM is seeking an experienced Senior Sewer Modelling Engineer to join our Enterprise Capabilities Design Center in Bogotá D.C. The selected candidate will support the development, calibration, and application of hydraulic models for large-scale municipal sewer systems serving urban areas with populations exceeding 500,000 inhabitants.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience calibrating hydraulic models of existing sanitary, combined, and municipal sewer systems using flow monitoring, rainfall data, wastewater diurnal patterns, and rainfall-dependent inflow and infiltration (RDII) analysis. Particular emphasis will be placed on wet weather flow (WWF) assessment, model calibration, and validation using monitored system performance data.

This role requires strong expertise in InfoWorks ICM, hydraulic model calibration, RTK-based RDII modelling, flow monitoring analysis, and sewer system performance evaluation. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Canadian project teams to develop, calibrate, and refine models that support planning and operational decision-making for large municipal utilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and update hydraulic models of large municipal sanitary, stormwater, and combined sewer systems using InfoWorks ICM.
  • Build and calibrate sewer network models using flow monitoring, rainfall records, SCADA data, asset inventories, and other available operational datasets.
  • Perform hydraulic capacity assessments to identify bottlenecks, surcharge conditions, overflow risks, and operational deficiencies within wastewater collection systems.
  • Evaluate sewer system performance under existing and future growth scenarios, including population growth, urban development, and climate resilience considerations.
  • Conduct inflow and infiltration (I&I) investigations and support the identification of rehabilitation and optimization strategies.
  • Support sewer master planning studies, collection system improvement programs, capital improvement plans (CIPs), and long-term infrastructure investment strategies.
  • Analyze alternatives for sewer conveyance improvements, storage facilities, pumping stations, interceptor systems, and network expansion projects.
  • Develop modelling methodologies, QA/QC procedures, calibration reports, technical memoranda, and modelling documentation.
  • Translate modelling results into practical engineering recommendations to support planning, rehabilitation, and design projects.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, figures, and client deliverables in English and Spanish.
  • Coordinate with GIS, asset management, survey, operations, and design teams to ensure model accuracy and consistency.
  • Review modelling deliverables for quality and technical consistency and provide mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and geographic regions to deliver integrated wastewater infrastructure solutions.
  • Support project pursuits, technical proposals, scope development, and client workshops.
  • Develop, maintain, and calibrate hydraulic models of large sanitary, combined, and municipal sewer systems using InfoWorks ICM.
  • Analyze flow monitoring, rainfall, SCADA, and asset datasets to support model development, calibration, and validation.
  • Develop and apply dry weather flow (DWF) patterns, including weekday and weekend diurnal wastewater profiles, based on monitored flow data.
  • Review and refine population allocations and per capita wastewater flow assumptions used in model development and calibration.
  • Implement and calibrate rainfall-dependent inflow and infiltration (RDII) parameters, including RTK hydrograph methodologies.
  • Evaluate model performance against monitored flow data by assessing peak flow magnitude, timing, response volume, and overall goodness-of-fit.
  • Perform calibration and validation simulations for multiple historical wet weather events and identify opportunities for model improvement.
  • Prepare calibration plots, model-versus-monitored comparisons, time-series visualizations, and model performance assessments.
  • Identify monitoring locations that are difficult to calibrate and document potential causes, including rainfall variability, antecedent moisture conditions, data quality issues, and model limitations.
  • Support large-scale calibration programs involving numerous flow monitoring locations across municipal sewer systems.
  • Document calibration methodologies, assumptions, QA/QC procedures, results, and recommendations.
  • Collaborate closely with project teams, utility stakeholders, and technical leads to achieve calibration objectives and maintain modelling quality standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior modelling staff.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • At least 4 years of professional experience in municipal sewer system modelling and hydraulic analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience calibrating hydraulic models of existing sanitary, combined, or municipal sewer systems using monitored flow and rainfall data.
  • Advanced proficiency in InfoWorks ICM, including model development, calibration, validation, and scenario analysis.
  • Experience developing and applying dry weather flow (DWF) patterns, wastewater diurnal curves, and population-based flow assignments.
  • Experience with wet weather flow (WWF) analysis, rainfall-dependent inflow and infiltration (RDII) modelling, and RTK parameter development and calibration.
  • Experience evaluating model performance through comparison of modeled and monitored data, including peak flow, response timing, volume, and goodness-of-fit assessments.
  • Experience working with large and complex municipal sewer systems serving urban populations of 500,000 inhabitants or greater.
  • Proficiency with GIS platforms, flow monitoring datasets, rainfall records, and hydraulic modelling data management workflows.
  • Strong technical reporting, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish (written and spoken).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting wastewater utility master plans, collection system capacity assessments, and capital improvement programs for large municipalities.
  • Experience supporting sewer system calibration programs involving 100 or more flow monitoring locations.
  • Experience calibrating models for large municipal utilities in Canada, particularly for wet weather flow management, RDII analysis, and collection system planning.
  • Experience applying RTK methodologies within InfoWorks ICM or SWMM-based modelling environments.
  • Experience interpreting flow monitoring programs and developing calibration strategies for large urban sewer systems.
  • Knowledge of Canadian wastewater and sewer system planning practices and municipal modelling standards.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and reviewing calibration deliverables.
  • Professional licensure (e.g., PE, P.Eng., CEng) or active progress toward licensure.
  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
  • Sponsorship for Colombia work authorization is not available for this position, now or in the future.
