Senior Environmental Scientist/Project Manager - Mine Remediation, Western Canada
Job Description
AECOM is seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Scientist/Project Manager to join our growing Western Canada remediation team in Whitehorse, Yukon. Reporting to the Faro Mine Project Director, you will participate in the delivery of major mine site remediation portfolios in northern Canada. Collaborating with multidisciplinary internal and external teams, you will play a key role in advancing some of Canada’s largest and most complex remediation projects.

This position will support the delivery of major mine remediation and environmental restoration programs across Canada's northern territories. The role encompasses project leadership, multidisciplinary team coordination, client engagement, contract administration, project controls oversight, and support for environmental assessment and regulatory processes. The successful candidate will work closely with technical specialists, contractors, Indigenous communities, regulatory agencies, and clients to advance complex remediation programs from planning through implementation.
Our preferred candidate is a collaborative and results-oriented professional who enjoys solving complex challenges and leading high-performing teams. Experience delivering large-scale projects in remote northern environments, managing multiple stakeholders and rights holders, and navigating complex regulatory and Indigenous consultation requirements will be highly valued.

Responsibilities
Below are example responsibilities you can expect when working within the AECOM team to deliver all phases of major mine remediation programs:
- Lead the planning, execution, and delivery of mine remediation and environmental management projects throughout all project phases.
- Develop and maintain project management plans, schedules, budgets, risk registers, and resource forecasts.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams consisting of environmental, civil, geotechnical, hydrotechnical, permitting, and project controls specialists.
- Manage project scope, schedule, budget, quality, and risk while ensuring contractual obligations are met.
- Lead client interactions and maintain effective communication with project stakeholders, regulators, Indigenous governments and organizations, and contractors.
- Support procurement and contract management activities, including development of scopes of work, evaluation of proposals, and oversight of subcontractor performance.
- Collaborate with project controls teams to monitor project performance, forecast costs, track progress, and support reporting requirements.
- Support environmental assessment, permitting, licensing, and regulatory review processes associated with mine remediation projects.
- Facilitate project meetings, workshops, and risk reviews, ensuring actions are tracked and completed.
- Prepare and review project reports, presentations, status updates, and executive-level communications.
- Provide leadership, mentoring, and guidance to project managers, coordinators, and technical staff.
- Lead proposal preparation, business development initiatives, and strategic growth opportunities within AECOM's Northern remediation practice.
- Promote AECOM's quality, health and safety, environmental, and project management standards across project teams.
- Travel periodically to project sites across northern Canada to support project delivery and client engagement.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Business, Project Management, Natural Resources, or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of experience managing complex projects in the mining, environmental remediation, infrastructure, resource development, or heavy civil sectors.
- Demonstrated experience managing multidisciplinary project teams and coordinating activities across multiple stakeholders.
- Experience developing and managing project schedules, budgets, risks, contracts, and project controls processes.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to remote project locations.
Preferred Qualifications

- 20+ years of project delivery experience.
- Proven experience managing large-scale projects valued at $30M+.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) designation.
- Experience delivering projects in northern or remote environments.
- Experience supporting major mine remediation, mine closure, environmental restoration, or resource development projects.
- Demonstrated success working with Indigenous governments, communities, and rights holders.
- Experience managing consultants, contractors, and procurement processes for major projects.
- Familiarity with environmental assessment processes, permitting, licensing, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Experience overseeing project controls functions, including cost management, forecasting, scheduling, and risk management.
- Strong leadership capabilities with a demonstrated ability to build, mentor, and develop high-performing teams.
- MBA, Master's degree, or other advanced professional qualifications.
- Existing relationships within western and northern Canadian mining, remediation, and environmental sectors.
