Join us.\n We are seeking an experienced T&D Manager (Associate Director level) - Primary Substations to join our growing Transmission & Distribution team, supporting the delivery of high-voltage substation infrastructure projects.\nIn this role, you will provide strategic technical oversight and leadership for the design and delivery of HV primary systems, including AIS and GIS substations across transmission and distribution networks. You will guide engineering teams through project development phases, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient technical solutions.\nYou will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, project directors, and clients, contributing to major grid reinforcement, renewable integration, and large-scale infrastructure programs.\nKey Responsibilities\nTechnical Leadership & Design Oversight\nProvide technical oversight and guidance for the design of HV primary systems for substations (AIS/GIS), including equipment layouts, busbar schemes, and HV cable design.\nEnsure technical consistency and quality across substation projects by reviewing key design decisions, engineering strategies, and equipment selection in accordance with applicable standards and client specifications.\nOversee development and review of critical primary design deliverables, including:\no Substation general arrangements and equipment layouts and specifications\no Busbar configurations, calcs and conductor sizing\no Electrical clearances, insulation coordination and short-circuit calcs\no Lightning protection and shielding concepts\no Earthing and grounding system\nEngineering Coordination\nAct as senior technical authority for primary substation engineering, ensuring coordination between primary, secondary, civil, structural, and commissioning disciplines.\nSupport project leadership teams in defining engineering strategies, technical scopes, and delivery approaches for major infrastructure projects.\nMaintain strong engagement with clients, contractors, and suppliers to ensure technical compliance and alignment with project objectives.\nTechnical Assurance\nEnsure alignment between primary design, protection philosophy, and network performance requirements.\nIdentify technical risks and opportunities for design optimisation to improve reliability, operability, constructability, and lifecycle performance.\nSupport governance and quality assurance processes for engineering deliverables.\nConstruction & Commissioning Support\nProvide senior engineering support during construction, installation, testing, and commissioning phases.\nReview and guide resolution of complex site queries, technical deviations, and field design changes.\nEnsure that implemented designs comply with technical specifications, safety standards, and project requirements.\nTeam Leadership & Development\nLead and mentor teams of primary substation engineers, supporting professional development, technical growth, and knowledge sharing.\nFoster a collaborative engineering culture, ensuring alignment between teams, efficient workload distribution, and high technical standards.\nTeam Coordination & Strategic Delivery\nSupport the coordination of engineering resources across projects to ensure efficient delivery and consistent technical quality.\nWork closely with project leadership to align engineering activities with business objectives, client expectations, and program schedules.\nEducation\nBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering\nExperience\nTypically 12-15+ years of experience in HV primary substation engineering\nExperience delivering large transmission or distribution substation projects across multiple phases (concept, FEED, detailed design, construction support)\nProven experience leading engineering teams or technical disciplines\nTechnical Skills\nStrong expertise in:\nHV/EHV substation design (AIS/GIS)\nBusbar configurations and substation equipment layouts\nInsulation coordination and electrical clearances\nShort-circuit calculations and equipment rating verification\nBusbar and conductor sizing (thermal and short-circuit withstand)\nMechanical and electrodynamic force calculations for conductors\nIntegration of HV equipment, cables, and overhead lines\nEarthing and grounding system design\nLightning protection and shielding studies\nTransformer and reactive power compensation systems\nTechnical design reviews\nExperience with engineering tools such as:\nCDEGS\nCYMCAP\nRevit\nAutoCAD or similar design software\nSoft Skills\nStrong leadership and team management capabilities\nStrategic thinking and decision-making abilities\nExcellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills\nAbility to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams\nNice to Have\nExperience working on UK transmission or distribution substation projects\nExposure to National Grid standards and technical specifications\nExperience with EHV substations (220kV-400kV)\nChartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional certification\nExperience supporting construction, commissioning, or site engineering activities\nAt AECOM, we are committed to maintaining a secure and trustworthy recruitment process and take any fraudulent hiring activity seriously.
