Aeroflow Health specializes in improving patient access to medical supplies. See how we remove barriers for better care.

Aeroflow Health - Data Engineer

Aeroflow Health is a national leader in home medical equipment and clinical services. We combine technology, operational excellence, and compassionate expertise to deliver essential products and care directly to patients’ homes. At Aeroflow Health, we make healthcare accessible by taking a holistic approach to how we care for our patients.

We are equally passionate about taking care of our employees. Recognized as one of the fastest-growing healthcare companies in the U.S., an Inc. 5000 honoree, and a certified Great Place to Work®, Aeroflow continues to seek ways to be one of the nation’s top employers. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to building an exceptional workplace where talented professionals are empowered, supported, and inspired to make a meaningful impact every day.

The Opportunity

Within Aeroflow, the SQL Engineering team builds and supports the databases, data pipelines, and application logic that power critical operational workflows across the organization.

Our environment combines deeply established Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL) systems with a growing AWS cloud ecosystem. As Aeroflow continues to scale, the team is focused not only on supporting today’s environment, but also on thoughtfully modernizing how our data systems are built, deployed, and maintained for the future.

We are looking for a hands-on Data Engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering problems, writing and optimizing production SQL, improving existing systems, and partnering directly with both technical teams and business stakeholders.

This is an engineering-focused position rather than a reporting, BI, or analytics-focused role. While every week will look a little different, you can expect the role to be approximately 60% hands-on SQL/AWS engineering, 20% business and technical partnership, and 20% code review and engineering collaboration.

This position works on a hybrid schedule, three days per week in the office.

Your Primary Responsibilities:

Hands-on Data & SQL Engineering:

  • Design, develop, and maintain reliable SQL-based solutions that support critical operational and application workflows.
  • Write and optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, data models, and production database logic.
  • Troubleshoot, optimize, and refactor existing SQL code and legacy processes to improve performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Build and maintain scalable data pipelines and workflows across established database systems and modern AWS environments.
  • Navigate complex integrations and data dependencies across multiple systems and business functions.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce technical debt, automate manual processes, and thoughtfully modernize legacy solutions.

Business & Technical Partnership

  • Partner directly with business and technical stakeholders to understand the problem behind the request-not simply execute against a ticket.
  • Translate business requirements into practical, maintainable engineering solutions.
  • Ask thoughtful questions, uncover dependencies and constraints, and help stakeholders understand technical tradeoffs.
  • Collaborate closely with Application Engineering, Analytics, and other technology teams to deliver solutions that work effectively across systems and business functions.

Engineering Quality & Team Contribution

  • Review code and collaborate with other engineers to improve quality, consistency, performance, and maintainability.
  • Apply sound technical judgment when balancing scalability, reliability, complexity, performance, and business needs.
  • Develop and maintain clear technical documentation for database architecture, workflows, and engineering processes.
  • Contribute as a hands-on individual engineer while sharing knowledge and helping strengthen engineering practices across the team.
  • Maintain HIPAA/patient confidentiality and comply with applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Compliance is a condition of employment and is considered an element of job performance.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance as assigned by your schedule.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

Skills for Success

  • Strong SQL engineering instincts: Understand how database design, query structure, indexing, and application behavior affect performance and reliability.
  • Analytical problem-solving: Enjoy digging into complicated problems, tracing dependencies, identifying root causes, and improving systems rather than simply treating symptoms.
  • Pragmatic technical judgment: Distinguish meaningful engineering improvements from unnecessary complexity and clearly explain the tradeoffs behind your recommendations.
  • Systems thinking: Understand how databases, applications, infrastructure, integrations, and business processes interact rather than viewing SQL in isolation.
  • Business curiosity: Ask questions, understand the underlying business problem, and help determine the right solution rather than simply working from a ticket.
  • Communication and collaboration: Work effectively with engineers, technical leaders, and non-technical stakeholders while making complex concepts understandable.
  • Operational discipline: Value maintainable code, repeatable processes, documentation, automation, and prevention over hero-driven firefighting.
  • Team mentality: Contribute independently while reviewing code, sharing knowledge, receiving feedback, and helping strengthen the broader team.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional experience in Data Engineering, Database Engineering, advanced SQL development, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Strong hands-on SQL engineering experience, including writing and maintaining complex queries, stored procedures, data models, and production database logic.
  • Professional experience with Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL) or significant engineering experience with another relational database platform such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle, with the ability and willingness to transition into an MSSQL-heavy environment.
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and improving SQL performance, including query optimization, indexing, execution efficiency, and database design.
  • Experience working with complex production databases and understanding how scale, integrations, and systemic dependencies affect engineering decisions.
  • Working knowledge of AWS or another modern cloud environment, with the technical foundation and interest to continue developing cloud engineering expertise.
  • Experience reviewing, debugging, and improving existing code and database solutions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with business and technical stakeholders, understand business requirements, and translate them into practical engineering solutions.

You Might Also Have:

  • Experience working with very large databases (VLDBs), particularly environments of 1TB or greater.
  • Experience participating in or leading a migration from a legacy database or technology stack to a modern architecture or cloud environment.
  • Deeper hands-on experience with AWS services such as S3, RDS, Glue, Athena, or related technologies.
  • Experience with Python, Bash, or another scripting language used for automation or data engineering.
  • Experience with orchestration or transformation tools such as Apache Airflow or dbt.
  • Experience with source control, automated testing, or CI/CD practices for database and data engineering changes.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical, healthcare, or other regulated production environments requiring strong availability, security, disaster recovery, or audit discipline.

What We Look For

We are looking for highly motivated, talented engineers who measure success by the reliability of the systems they build and the business problems they help solve.

You should:

  • Be naturally curious and willing to dig beneath the initial request to understand the real problem that needs to be solved.
  • Take ownership of your work and be comfortable operating with autonomy while knowing when to collaborate or ask for input.
  • Care about writing maintainable, reliable, and testable code-not simply getting something to work.
  • Enjoy improving existing systems and processes rather than requiring a perfect greenfield environment.
  • Bring a practical, thoughtful approach to modernization and recognize when newer technology adds meaningful value.
  • Be comfortable working directly with stakeholders and asking questions rather than relying exclusively on tickets or predefined requirements.
  • Be collaborative, coachable, and willing to both give and receive thoughtful technical feedback.
  • Leave systems, processes, and teams stronger than you found them.
