Our platform combines high-throughput biological screening with advanced materials development to get novel materials from lab discovery to real-world production faster than traditional R&D allows. We're starting starting in additive manufacturing and expanding into high-performance polymers. We operate out of Menlo Park and South San Francisco.\nAbout the Team\nThe Materials team sits at the center of that bridge: translating what the biology platform discovers into materials that actually ship. It's a small, hands-on group, which means you'll be doing bench work and first-principles thinking in the same week. Everyone is close to the science.\nAbout the Role\nWe’re looking for an Analytical Research Associate to support our materials and product development efforts through hands-on analytical testing, with a primary focus on gel permeation chromatography (GPC). This is an early career, lab-intensive role ideal for someone who enjoys running samples, maintaining instruments, and ensuring high-quality, reproducible data in a fast-moving research environment.\nIn this role, you’ll spend the majority of your time preparing and running polymer samples on our GPC systems, working closely with an analytical scientist and collaborating with scientists across the materials team. You’ll also play an important role in instrument maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and documentation - helping ensure our analytical methods perform consistently and reliably.\nWhile this role is primarily execution-focused, it offers room to grow over time into deeper analytical ownership, including method development and expanded responsibility across chromatography-based techniques. This role is onsite at our South San Francisco facility.\nAbout You\nYou’re someone who enjoys being in the lab, takes pride in producing reliable data, and thrives in a small, highly technical startup environment. You balance attention to detail with flexibility and creativity, communicate clearly with teammates, and aren’t afraid to flag issues early when something doesn’t look right.\nWhat You’ll Do:\nPrepare and run polymer samples on GPC systems, following established methods and SOPs\n\nTrack method performance to ensure data quality, reproducibility, and consistency over time\n\nPerform routine instrument maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting, escalating issues as needed\n\nIdentify clearly problematic or compromised data and communicate issues proactively\n\nCollaborate closely with an analytical scientist on scheduling, priorities, and technical problem-solving\n\nSupport materials scientists and engineers by running analytical tests for ongoing experiments\n\nMaintain accurate records of experiments, maintenance, and calibrations\n\nContribute to writing or updating SOPs and best practices as the lab and team evolve\n\nOver time, take on additional ownership such as consumables management, method improvements, or expanded analytical scope\n\nWhat We’re Looking For:\nRequired / Core Skills\nHands-on experience running samples on a SEC/GPC or similar LC system (academic or industry)\n\nStrong fundamentals in chromatography and laboratory best practices\n\nExperience working with polymers (synthetic and/or biopolymers)\n\nHigh attention to detail and commitment to data quality\n\nComfort working independently while collaborating closely with others\n\nAbility to recognize when data or samples are clearly problematic and speak up\n\nSafe lab practices, including handling chemicals, solvents, and glassware\n\nNice to Have\nIndustry experience (1-3 years preferred, but not required)\n\nExposure to instrument calibration, maintenance, or troubleshooting\n\nExperience with multiple analytical techniques beyond GPC\n\nFamiliarity with rheology or interest in learning additional techniques\n\nExperience contributing to SOPs or method documentation\n\nGrowth & Development\nThis role is designed to grow with the right person. As our analytical needs expand, strong performers may take on:\nGreater ownership of GPC methods and performance tracking\n\nInvolvement in method development and optimization\n\nBroader analytical responsibilities across chromatography-based techniques\n\nA longer-term path toward expanded scientific or technical roles, aligned with individual interests\n\nNote\nAether Biomachines is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. If you’re excited about this role but don’t meet every requirement, we encourage you to apply.\nThe pay range for this role is $85,000 - $110,000 per year + equity, with final compensation based on skills and experience. Employment at Aether is at-will, and reasonable accommodations are available upon request. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. At this time, Aether is not sponsoring visas for this position.","description_format":"text","description_chars":4990,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":1,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Equity"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Science & Engineering","Corporate Events","Petroleum & Mining Engineering"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-26T08:15:30Z"}],"liveness":{"score":84,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.842,"p_room":1,"age_days":5,"expected_fill_days":30,"reasons":["conf:1","win:early","comp:junior"],"computed_at":"2026-10-01T05:45:00Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":110000,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/aether-bio-research-associate-analytical","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/aether-bio-research-associate-analytical.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-01T13:03:13Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":4596,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":404,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-10-02T00:00:00Z"}}}
