First-round interviews are expected to take place in mid October, with the process anticipated to close by the first week of November. Timelines are indicative and may change.\nLOCATION: London, UK preferred. EU considered.\nMost high-stakes moments in AI over the coming years will involve frontier company insiders having and raising concerns: within companies, to regulators, or through other pathways.\nThose insiders tell us they face enormous uncertainty along the “concern raising” path -- from detecting concerns to whether and how to voice concerns with maximum impact and minimal risk, which even legally protected whistleblowing can carry.\nTo date, no organization has dedicated itself deeply to delivering the best strategic, frontier-AI-specific guidance to these individuals, their supporters, and their attorneys (our partners). We exist to ensure that each insider disclosure is maximally impactful and safe for the person making the disclosure.\nTasks\nAbout the role\nYou will own all of AIWI's technology: architecture, implementation, deployment, security, and maintenance. Delivery will be hands-on and you will manage a budget for executing items defined on your roadmap.\nYou will work closely with the founders and our Head of Security, and translate requirements from our operations, research, and advocacy teams into working systems. The work is demanding, sensitive, and consequential; conviction in our mission is essential.\nAreas of Ownership\nInternal tooling. We operate in a highly sensitive environment. Many commercial SaaS products, and hosted AI models in particular, do not meet our security and data sovereignty requirements. You will build and operate our self-hosted, primarily OSS stack end to end: A secure CRM tailored to our needs, state-of-the-art self-hosted AI models and agent systems integrated into knowledge management, call recording, communication tooling, other OSS software we self host, and in-house development of news tracking solutions. If you are excited about designing architecture that allows air-gapping and decentralized access, this role is for you.\nExternal-facing technology. You take offerings from prototype to production end-to-end: Zero-knowledge proof solutions for anonymous coordination, interactive scenario simulators, or automated legislation trackers. Projects can span months or require rapid 3-day delivery. You will also oversee the tech-side of our website. Your solutions will directly drive the impact and safety of AI whistleblowers.\nThis means you will frequently handle multiple projects simultaneously. You will be the first non-volunteer engineer working on AIWI dedicated technology. Across all areas, security is foundational. You will work closely here with our Head of Security.\nRequirements\nGenuine, demonstrable passion for AI safety and whistleblower protection.\n10 years in software engineering with DevOps experience in fast-moving settings.\nExcellent proficiency across systems-, backend- and web-development; proficiency with systems languages (Rust, Go, C, C++ etc.) required.\nExperience with JS/TS, HTML, CSS, web frameworks required.\nPython for AI and Data pipelines required.\nExcellent project management abilities and communication skills especially towards non-technical colleagues.\nStrong grasp of CI/CD, security hardening, cloud and self-hosted infrastructure.\nIaC experience (Ansible, OpenTofu, etc.) required.\nExperience deploying and integrating existing AI models and tooling (self-hosted open-weight models, agent frameworks, APIs where appropriate) - this is systems integration, not ML research or model training.\nAbility to rapidly execute and ability to distinguish between levels of QA and security required for different projects.\nRigorous approach to threat modeling and operational security. You do not have to be a security expert as you will be working with our Head of Security - but should bring a strong mindset and strong foundational knowledge.\nBenefits\nPackage\nGBP £70,000 - £90,000 commensurate with experience\nUp to 9% on UEL pension contribution\n25 days of annual leave plus public bank holidays\nPaid parental leave\nProfessional development budget\nA home office or equipment stipend for hybrid staff\nWellness budget\nPaid for co-working space in London\nFlexible scheduling; occasional out-of-hours work required\nWhy join?\nWork as part of an ambitious team committed to a high leverage intervention: A single whistleblower disclosure can move the world if handled well. We get up every morning to make it go well.\nWork on a vast breadth of technological challenges and varying project sizes.\nOwnership and responsibility from day 1.\nChance to define your personal career development.\nCoaching by an AIWI board member and serial entrepreneur/CTO as well as close collaboration with an extremely experienced Head of Security.\nWho you'd be joining:\nAIWI is an independent non-profit launched in late 2024. We are ~4 team members today and are scaling to ~15 within the year, spread across the Bay Area, DC, and London. Joining now, you will significantly shape what the future of AI insider support looks like. We are funded until 2029.\nExamples of our work to date:\nPolicy: We pushed for and shaped the EU AI Office's channel, the world's first AI whistleblowing channel. In the US, we support the federal AI Whistleblower Protection Act and have provided expert research input on implementing SB 53's incident reporting mechanisms through a research coalition, which we helped set up. Read our work in Tech Policy Press, the Institute for Law & AI, and Transformer, and see our AI Whistleblowing Law Best Practice Guide.\nInsider education & support: Our online campaigns have reached thousands of company employees. We produce guides (available upon request), online courses, and help establish connections to our great partner attorneys and support (e.g. on legal advice and defense funding).\nAdvocacy: Anthropic published its whistleblowing policy and OpenAI strengthened theirs following our Publish Your Policies Campaign.\nNetwork: We closely collaborate with the world's leading whistleblowing and AI organizations.\nOur ambition is to ensure that each insider disclosure is maximally impactful and safe for the person making the disclosure. Joining us means dedicating yourself to achieving that goal with us.\nHiring process:\nApplication review\nIntro call (15 min): Jenny, Head of People & Ops\nGet-to-know call (30 min): Max, Technology Advisor\nTake-home task (2-3 hrs) + review call (45 min): Max\nFinal interview* (1 hour): competency-based, plus meet Karl (Founder) or Jenny\nReferences\n* Ideally, we would like to meet you in our London office.\nReferral program:\nWe provide a reward of £4,000 for successful referrals upon completion of a 6-month employment period. Allocation will occur based on a successful applicant's attribution in the case of multiple referrers.\nHow to apply:\nApply by submitting your application via Join.com.\nWe will begin reviewing applications on a rolling basis from 5 October.\nThe first round is set to take place in mid October.\nTherefore, anticipated close date is early November.\nWork authorization:\nFor London-based roles, we can sponsor UK visas.\nEqual Opportunity:\nAIWI is an equal opportunities employer, in line with the UK Equality Act 2010. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and are committed to a workplace free from discrimination.","description_format":"text","description_chars":7566,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Annual leave","Home office","Parental leave","Professional development"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United Kingdom","iso":"GB","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Think Tanks & Policy Research","Research Institutes"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-12T16:47:13Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":13,"band":"cold","label":"Long shot","p_open":1,"p_active":0.46,"p_room":0.28,"age_days":74,"expected_fill_days":30,"reasons":["conf:3","win:tail","crowd:"],"computed_at":"2026-10-27T05:46:45Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/aiwi-principal-engineer-london","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/aiwi-principal-engineer-london.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-27T18:54:56Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":9273,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-28T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":1776663},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=1776663"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Faiwi-principal-engineer-london"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Faiwi-principal-engineer-london"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Faiwi-principal-engineer-london"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/aiwi-principal-engineer-london\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Faiwi-principal-engineer-london"}]}
