The culture values transparency, open dialogue and an environment where every voice is heard and contribution is recognized.\nThrough collaboration, accountability and a focus on results, Algoworks operates at the intersection of technology and people, building not only advanced systems but strong global teams that elevate performance and create lasting impact.\nRole overview\nWe are seeking a Backend Engineer with strong experience in Node.js or Python, Azure services, REST APIs, SQL databases and cloud-native backend development to design and implement backend services for a self-service Data Analysis Platform.\nThe role will focus on developing the Portal Backend API, designing Azure SQL data models, implementing engagement-scoped role-based access control, building secure file ingestion and storage services, audit logging, automated environment provisioning and asynchronous processing workflows.\nThe ideal candidate will have strong backend engineering fundamentals combined with hands-on experience working with Microsoft Azure, secure API development, distributed systems and data-intensive applications. Experience with Azure Functions, Service Bus, Azure Blob Storage/ADLS Gen2, Power BI and Azure OpenAI will be highly valuable.\nKey responsibilities:\n1. Backend API Development\nDesign and implement the Portal Backend API using Node.js or Python.\nDevelop secure and scalable REST endpoints for engagement management, file management, user and role management, and provisioning workflows.\nImplement robust business logic, validation, error handling and API security.\nDesign APIs that support scalable integration with frontend applications and downstream services.\nMaintain clear API documentation and development standards.\nTroubleshoot and optimize backend services for reliability and performance.\n2. Azure SQL and Data Modeling\nDesign and implement Azure SQL schemas for the shared Portal Metadata Database.\nDevelop data models for engagement registries, file catalogs and related platform metadata.\nDesign and maintain per-engagement Analytics SQL databases.\nWrite efficient SQL queries, stored procedures and data-access logic where appropriate.\nOptimize database queries and schemas for performance and scalability.\nEnsure appropriate data isolation between engagements.\n3. Authentication, Authorization and RBAC\nImplement engagement-scoped Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) middleware.\nIntegrate backend authentication and authorization with Azure Entra ID using OIDC/OAuth.\nImplement and enforce the platform's three primary roles: admin, practitioner and client.\nEnsure users can access only the engagements and resources for which they are authorized.\nSecure REST APIs and backend services against unauthorized access.\nImplement appropriate permission checks across engagement, file, user and administrative operations.\n4. File Storage and Ingestion Services\nDesign and implement secure file upload and download services using Azure Blob Storage / ADLS Gen2.\nImplement secure SAS token issuance for controlled file access.\nSupport large, multi-GB file uploads with appropriate validation and reliability mechanisms.\nImplement checksum validation and file-integrity verification.\nDesign efficient file metadata and catalog management.\nHandle upload failures, retries and other edge cases gracefully.\nEnsure file access follows engagement-level authorization and security policies.\n5. Audit Logging and Compliance\nDesign and implement a centralized audit logging system.\nCapture data uploads, access events, downloads and administrative actions.\nEnsure audit records contain sufficient information for compliance, security investigations and operational observability.\nImplement secure and reliable storage of audit information.\nEnsure audit logging is integrated consistently across relevant backend services and workflows.\n6. Engagement Lifecycle Management\nImplement backend workflows for engagement creation, provisioning, archival and decommissioning.\nDevelop provisioning request and approval workflows.\nTrigger automated environment creation and provisioning processes.\nImplement retention policies and lifecycle controls.\nSupport controlled teardown and decommissioning of engagement environments.\nEnsure lifecycle operations are secure, auditable and appropriately authorized.\n7. Power BI Integration\nImplement backend integration with Power BI for secure client-facing report delivery.\nIntegrate with Power BI APIs and supporting services.\nEnsure embedded reports and dashboards are accessible only to authorized users and engagements.\nImplement appropriate authentication, authorization and access-control mechanisms for report delivery.\n8. Azure Functions and Asynchronous Processing\nDesign and implement Azure Functions for asynchronous and event-driven operations.\nImplement provisioning workflows triggered through Azure Service Bus.\nDevelop scheduled functions for lifecycle management and operational tasks.\nBuild serverless data-processing pipelines where appropriate.\nImplement reliable processing, retry and error-handling mechanisms for asynchronous workflows.\nEnsure serverless components are scalable, maintainable and observable.\n9. AI-assisted Data Processing\nIntegrate backend services with Azure OpenAI inference endpoints.\nSupport AI-assisted data processing capabilities within the analytics workbench.\nDevelop secure API integrations for AI inference workflows.\nApply appropriate validation, error handling and security controls around AI-assisted processing.\nCollaborate with data and application teams to integrate AI capabilities into backend workflows.\n10. Testing and Quality Engineering\nWrite comprehensive unit and integration tests for backend services.\nTest REST API endpoints, authentication and authorization middleware, business logic and data-access components.\nTest file upload/download workflows and asynchronous processing.\nValidate security and engagement-scoped access controls through automated tests.\nMaintain adequate regression coverage as platform functionality evolves.\nIdentify and resolve defects before production deployment.\n11. Code Review and Engineering Practices\nParticipate actively in peer code reviews.\nReview pull requests for correctness, security, performance and maintainability.\nEnsure code follows established coding standards and engineering best practices.\nProvide constructive feedback and contribute to continuous improvement of backend development practices.\nMaintain clean, readable, testable and maintainable production code.\nRequired technical skills and competencies:\n5+ years of professional backend/software development experience.\nStrong hands-on experience with Node.js or Python.\nStrong experience designing and developing RESTful APIs.\nExperience with cloud-based backend application development.\nStrong experience with Microsoft Azure services.\nHands-on experience
