The current measurement relies on a Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) lock whose feedback loop bandwidth restricts the sensing to a narrow frequency band.\nThe Experimental Physics Intern, Broadband Flux Noise Sensing contributes to extending this capability to a broad frequency band by setting up and operating a cryogenic experiment to characterise these chips, identifying the limitations to broadband operation, and proposing and testing ways to overcome them.\nReporting to the Team Lead, HERMES, they will work closely with the quantum and RF characterisation engineers of the HERMES team to deliver a validated broadband flux noise sensing method.\nThe internship starts between January and March 2027 and lasts 6 months!\nResponsibilities:\n Develop and set up the flux noise measurement experiment - Design and assemble the cryogenic and RF measurement chain (wiring, filtering, amplification, instrumentation) - Implement and document the measurement and control software in Python\n Characterise flux noise measurement chips - Calibrate the flux-tunable resonators (frequency vs. flux, operating point, PDH lock parameters) - Measure the flux noise power spectral density and extract the relevant metrics\nAnalyse the limitations to broadband operation - Model and measure the feedback loop bandwidth, latencies and noise contributions of the readout chain - Identify the dominant physical and instrumental limits across the frequency band\nPropose and test solutions to extend the measurement bandwidth - Evaluate alternative locking, readout or analysis schemes - Implement and validate the most promising approaches experimentally\nReport and share results - Document experiments, analyses and conclusions in the team's internal tools - Present progress and findings to the HERMES team\nRequirements:\nYou are a Master's student in physics, engineering physics or electrical/electronics engineering, with a strong interest in experimental work.\nYou combine a good theoretical grasp of electromagnetism and microwave systems with practical programming skills, and are comfortable building, operating and troubleshooting a measurement setup.\nLANGUAGES: Proficient in English\n EXPERIENCE: Prior lab or project experience in RF/microwave measurements or low-temperature physics; experience with cryostats or superconducting quantum circuits is a plus\nSolid understanding of magnetic fields, flux and electromagnetic coupling\nKnowledge of microwave engineering: waveguides, resonators, transmission lines, S-parameters\nProficiency in Python for instrument control, data acquisition and analysis\nUnderstanding of feedback and control loops (gain, bandwidth, latency, stability)\nFamiliarity with noise characterisation and spectral analysis (power spectral density)\nHands-on experimental skills: assembling and debugging measurement setups\nRigour in documenting experiments and analysing results\nAutonomy, curiosity and a problem-solving mindset","description_format":"text","description_chars":3187,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"master","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[{"language":"English","level":"Advanced (C1)","optional":false}]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"France","iso":"FR","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Quantum Computing Hardware"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-20T11:09:59Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":90,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.903,"p_room":1,"age_days":1,"expected_fill_days":71,"reasons":["conf:1","velocity","win:early","comp:junior"],"computed_at":"2026-10-22T06:10:10Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/alice-bob-experimental-physics-intern-mf","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/alice-bob-experimental-physics-intern-mf.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-22T06:43:17Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":1799,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-23T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":1906},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=1906"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Falice-bob-experimental-physics-intern-mf"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Falice-bob-experimental-physics-intern-mf"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Falice-bob-experimental-physics-intern-mf"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/alice-bob-experimental-physics-intern-mf\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Falice-bob-experimental-physics-intern-mf"}]}
