This role is responsible for overseeing technical activities, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing staff, maintaining facility and equipment performance, and delivering high-quality analytical services to clients. The ideal candidate is a strong leader with deep technical expertise and a passion for operational excellence in a high-throughput production environment.\nKey Responsibilities\nLaboratory Operations & Technical Leadership\nOversee daily laboratory operations to ensure efficiency, quality, and timely project completion\nProvide technical guidance on instrument troubleshooting, method development, and data interpretation\nEnsure proper use, calibration, and performance of laboratory instrumentation\nSupport development and implementation of new analytical methods\nHigh-Throughput Production & Performance Management\nLead a high-volume production laboratory to consistently meet or exceed turnaround time (TAT) and on-time delivery (OTD) goals\nMonitor and manage workflow, sample volume, and resource allocation across departments to maintain optimal throughput\nEstablish, track, and report key performance indicators (KPIs) including TAT, backlog, capacity, and productivity\nIdentify bottlenecks and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce cycle time, and improve service reliability\nPartner with department supervisors to prioritize workload and ensure alignment with client expectations and contractual deadlines\nDrive a culture of accountability and continuous improvement focused on operational excellence and customer satisfaction\nQuality & Compliance\nEnsure compliance with ISO 17025, NELAC, DoD, and other applicable regulatory standards\nPartner with QA to maintain and improve laboratory quality systems\nMonitor regulatory updates and communicate requirements to staff\nSupport audits and inspections\nFacilities & Maintenance Management\nOversee laboratory facility operations, ensuring a safe, compliant, and efficient working environment\nCoordinate preventative maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and building systems\nWork with vendors and internal teams to maintain service contracts and ensure timely issue resolution\nEnsure compliance with safety, environmental, and operational requirements related to facility infrastructure\nIdentify and implement improvements to laboratory layout, utilities, and workflow efficiency\nTeam Leadership\nManage, mentor, and develop a team of 50+ laboratory personnel\nOversee hiring, training, performance evaluations, and staffing levels\nFoster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performance work environment\nClient & Business Support\nServe as a technical resource for client inquiries and data interpretation\nSupport project management and sales teams with technical expertise\nAssist with proposals, QAPPs, SOWs, and client presentations\nSystems & Process Improvement\nOptimize laboratory workflows, systems, and data management processes\nCollaborate with IT to support LIMS and automated reporting\nDrive continuous improvement initiatives\nQualifications\nEducation & Experience\nBachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related science (required)\nMinimum 5 years of laboratory management experience\nEnvironmental laboratory experience strongly preferred\nTechnical Skills\nStrong knowledge of ISO 17025 and environmental regulations\nExperience with LIMS systems\nProficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)\nUnderstanding of organic and inorganic analytical methods\nLeadership & Professional Skills\nProven success managing large teams (50+ staff)\nStrong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills\nExcellent communication and client relationship skills\nDemonstrated ability to manage high-throughput operations and meet performance targets\nExperience with managing P&L (preferred)\nWork Environment & Requirements\nAbility to sit or stand for extended periods\nOccasional overtime, evenings, or weekend work may be required\nHands-on use of laboratory and computer equipment\nWorking at ALS\nThe ALS team is a diverse and dedicated community united by our passion to make a difference in the world.\nOur values are important to us, and shape how we work, how we treat each other and how we recognise excellence.\nAt ALS, you’ll be supported to develop new skills and reach your full potential.
