We’re excited to share that we are hiring a Summer Student to join our Field Operations South Team.\nJob Description:\nNOTE: The start date is May 2027, and the length of the term is 4 months.\nAn opportunity exists for a Summer Student with the Transmission Field Operations team located in Rocky View County, AB. Reporting to the Manager, Substations South, this position will be part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for the operation and maintenance of Altalink’s transmission substations in Alberta. The successful candidate will be required to reside in the Calgary area.\nResponsibilities:\nOperate, inspect and maintain substation equipment (4160V- 500KV) associated with the AltaLink transmission system. \nProvide maintenance planning, schedulers and Altalink Control Center staff with information regarding equipment status and recommend improvements or replacements. \nTrouble response for stations facilities in the area. \nAssist and support other disciplines as required. \nAssist the Substations team on Capital upgrade and replacement work. \nAssist the Substation team with new technologies that include SVC and PST.\nAs required, develop and implement a plan for substation work including review and understanding of work packages and related work practices, procedures, policies/standards and regulations, ensuring that all practices meet or exceed existing requirements.\nEnsure development and documentation of Safe Work Plans as required.\nCoordinate and provide emergency response to system emergencies as required.\nAll candidates must demonstrate key behaviors and meet identified expectations outlined in our four cultural pillars - one team, continuous improvement, customer focus and personal accountability.\nRequirements\nFull-time returning to studies student enrolled in a related and recognized Technologist Diploma program preferably Electrical Engineering Technology. \nMust have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions and have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.\nProven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities. \nBe competent and comfortable working with computers and spreadsheets. \nWilling to develop skills and a career in the Substation Technologist discipline. \nEffective communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive outcomes.\nAbility to work independently and part of a team. \nDemonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work within strict deadlines. \nDemonstrate a willingness to work safely and show concern for environmental, health and safety issues in the workplace. \nStrong mechanical as well as electrical aptitude. \nMust have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions and comfortable working at heights. \nWilling to accept out of town working conditions and must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license. \nThis is a physically demanding position.
