Software Development Manager, Builder Tools Language Experience

The Language Experience team in Builder Tools is the center of excellence for Amazon's use of programming languages, highly-leveraged shared software, and application build tools.

Our tools are used in all aspects of the business, and their care and evolution are of critical importance to the effectiveness of Amazon. We're looking for a deeply technical leader interested in sustaining and evolving the shared software platform used by nearly every service within the company. Those with experience evolving broadly distributed and highly complex software libraries, such as large open source projects and mission critical foundational software stacks will be given an opportunity to have company wide impact.

Key job responsibilities

As a Software Development Manager on the Language Experience team in ASBX, you will be responsible for leading a strong team of software engineers to build and maintain the programming language toolchains, shared libraries, and build tools used by nearly every service at Amazon. You will be responsible for mentoring and coaching a high performing team of engineers with expertise in language internals such as compilers, runtimes, and package management, and in the distributed systems that build, test, and publish software across the company. You will be responsible for the full development life cycle and operation of these tools. Because thousands of teams already depend on them, much of the work is backward compatibility, moving internal consumers through version upgrades and deprecations, and staying current with the upstream open source projects Amazon builds on. You will own your team's roadmap. There is no separate product organization, so you will gather requirements from the engineering teams that use the tools, set technical direction with your principal engineers, and decide what gets built.

A day in the life

You will take on a variety of tasks, balancing priorities to ensure the team's success:

- Create, prioritize, communicate, manage, and execute roadmaps, projects, and other commitments.

- Set clear, measurable goals for the team and regularly communicate status of development, quality, operations, and system performance.

- Lead the team to improve processes to deliver higher software development velocity and quality.

- Lead team operational strategy defining metrics, improvements and support.

- Foster a culture of continuous improvement through coaching, mentoring, and feedback.

About the team

The Builder Tools Language Experience team is responsible for the core tooling used by builders across the company. We are responsible for the package managers, compilers, 3rd party software registries, and servers frameworks that the rest of the company builds their software on top of. We have a high talent density of language experts supporting customers who need support pushing the limits of their software stack.

Basic qualifications

- 3+ years of engineering team management experience

- 7+ years of engineering experience

- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

- 3+ years of Software Engineer, Software Developer, or related occupational experience

- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

- Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred qualifications

- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

- Experience building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers, or experience with full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
