AMD

AMD is an American semiconductor company founded in 1969 and headquartered in Santa Clara, California, that designs processors, graphics chips and adaptive computing hardware without owning fabrication plants. Its Ryzen and Threadripper processors and Radeon graphics serve consumers and creators, EPYC server chips have taken a large share of the data centre market from Intel, and the Instinct accelerators compete for AI training and inference workloads. The 2022 acquisition of Xilinx added field-programmable gate arrays and adaptive systems on chip, and the company also supplies the custom silicon inside the PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Kernel/Linux Engineer

THE ROLE

AMD's Server Software and Solutions Engineering team is looking for a Senior Linux Kernel Engineer to join our Linux Kernel and Virtualization Development team. In this role, you will help enable AMD x86-64 architecture features in Linux and contribute to the design and development of core CPU and SoC capabilities across the Linux kernel and related open-source projects.

You will collaborate with engineers across software and hardware teams to deliver innovative solutions that enhance virtualization, memory management, performance, scalability, low-level platform enablement, and Linux distribution integration. The position offers opportunities to contribute across the full software development lifecycle while engaging with the broader open-source community.

THE TEAM

Our team develops and optimizes foundational software technologies that help unlock the full potential of AMD processors in cloud, enterprise, and datacenter environments. We value collaboration, curiosity, diverse perspectives, and continuous learning. Team members work closely together to solve complex technical challenges and contribute to industry-leading open-source projects that have a broad impact across the Linux ecosystem.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

We recognize that candidates may not meet every qualification listed below. If your experience is closely aligned with this role and you're excited about the opportunity, we encourage you to apply.

Experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • x86 computing architecture
  • Linux kernel development and debugging
  • Virtualization technologies, including KVM and QEMU
  • Operating systems, memory management, and security concepts
  • Software development across the full product lifecycle
  • Open-source software development and upstream contribution workflows
  • Developing systems software in C
  • Linux kernel subsystems, core kernel, I/O, or platform software
  • GNU development tools and Git-based workflows
  • Working with external partners and open-source communities
  • Operating system concepts, data structures, ACPI, PCIe, and x86-64 architecture
  • Low-level debugging tools, emulators, and simulators
  • Performance optimization, scalability, and platform enablement

Additional experience that would be beneficial:

  • Contributions to Linux KVM, QEMU, or other virtualization technologies
  • Experience preparing and submitting patches through open-source development processes
  • Familiarity with virtualization extensions and hypervisor technologies

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional experience in Linux kernel, systems software, virtualization, operating systems, or related areas.

Benefits offered are described: AMD benefits at a glance.
