Our commitments are underpinned by the belief that safety, collaboration and well-being are integral to success.\nSummary:\nSeasonal Contract position supporting the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). Carpenters perform maintenance or construction work, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the Carpenter Foreman, PM Coordinator or Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Tasking is based on employee’s prior work experience and ASC schedule requirements.\nPosition Responsibilities (not all inclusive):\nPerform rough framing and finish carpentry utilizing a variety of materials and tools \nPerform construction related tasks in and around undeveloped and remote areas as well as in adverse conditions \nTrack material usage and update departmental inventory records \nCoordinate materials and support from other departments \nPerform tasks requiring repeated heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, digging, hauling, standing, walking, kneeling, stooping and squatting \nTimely response to emergency service calls during and outside of normal working hours \nAccurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials used, and processes involved\nAdvise immediate Supervisor of job progress and material/labor requirements \nAccomplish tasking utilizing design drawings, specifications, and wiring diagrams \nFollow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), suggest revisions as needed, and create SOPs as directed \nPerform tasking outdoors in environmentally challenging conditions including wind and extreme cold weather\nRoutinely utilize independent judgment and discretion to identify potential issues and solve problems\nProactively identify any unsafe conditions, hazards, or Code violations and communicate them effectively\nWork directly with other departments to plan and complete tasking \nLearn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, material, and maintenance tracking applications \nMay deploy to remote research support facilities for day trips or extended periods (McMurdo only)\nOccasionally utilize the assistance of other station personnel to complete tasking, or assist other trades or departments with their tasking\nComply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements \nParticipate in Work Center Safety Program and ASC safety objectives\nParticipate in community programs such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (station clean-up), “GASH” (galley clean-up at Palmer), and recycling efforts \nPerform other duties as required \nRequired Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:\nHigh School diploma or GED\nMinimum four years of documented experience in most phases of the carpentry trade, including rough framing, and finish carpentry\nExpected Skills and Competencies:\nAbility to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, and diagrams \nPossess prior computer experience and be able and willing to learn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications \nPossess the competencies, willingness and ability to perform the duties of position\nPreferred:\nWilderness First Responder, Wilderness First Aid, or Basic to Advanced first aid training (McMurdo Summer only)\nExperience accomplishing metal stud framing \nExperience hanging and finishing drywall\nExperience in construction and/or maintenance of commercial and/or industrial facilities\nExperience working in remote locations or extreme environments\nProficiency with Microsoft Office Suite\nPhysical and/or Other Requirements:\nWillingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods \nSuccessful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica\nSuccessful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer\nSuccessful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF\nMust be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position. \nMust be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position. \nMust participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives. \nValid Driver’s License issued in the United States\nNo clearance requirement but the contract and/or the site requires US Citizenship to be approved for access. (includes NACI / T1, MRPT, CAC): Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
