Strategic Communications, Corporate Affairs Director - R&D & AI&D

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world In this vital role, you will lead a strategic communications capability within the broader Research & Development (R&D) and Artificial Intelligence & Data (AI&D) Corporate Affairs teams. Partnering across the organization, you will help shape how one of the world's leading biotechnology companies communicates the future of scientific discovery-where breakthrough biology, data science and artificial intelligence converge to accelerate medicines for patients.

You will develop communications strategies that connect scientific innovation, AI transformation and business priorities into clear, compelling narratives for employees and key external stakeholders. Working closely with the Corporate Affairs Directors for Research, Development & Pipeline, and Artificial Intelligence & Data, you will contribute to communications initiatives that deepen employee engagement and enhance the company's reputation for innovation.

This position reports to the Executive Director, Corporate Affairs, Research & Development.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop integrated communications strategies that advance R&D and AI&D business priorities, organizational objectives, and enterprise initiatives.

  • Oversee the development of integrated communications campaigns and content across internal and external channels in partnership with R&D and AI&D Corporate Affairs teams that strengthen Amgen's scientific reputation, elevate thought leadership, and bring the company's R&D and AI&D strategy to life.

  • Shape and evolve the strategic narrative for R&D and AI&D, translating complex scientific, technical, and business concepts into compelling stories that engage employees, strengthen stakeholder understanding, and reinforce Amgen's scientific leadership.

  • Lead communications strategies that support organizational transformation, AI adoption, and new ways of working, helping employees understand, embrace, and engage with change.

  • Establish communications planning, governance, and measurement frameworks that improve prioritization, alignment, consistency, and overall business impact.

  • Develop and maintain communications dashboards, performance reporting, and analytics that provide actionable insights, demonstrate impact, and inform strategy and investment decisions.

  • Identify opportunities to simplify communications, reduce duplication, and elevate high-impact storytelling across R&D and AI&D communications.

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team, providing strategic direction, coaching, and career development for direct reports while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.

What we expect of you

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of communications or public relations experience

OR

Master’s degree and 7 years of communications or public relations experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of communications or public relations experience

Preferred Qualifications:

·Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.

·Significant experience leading strategic communications within biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, or technology organizations.

·Demonstrated success developing strategies that advance business priorities and organizational transformation.

·Strong understanding of scientific research, drug discovery and development, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, or other highly technical fields.

·Exceptional writing, storytelling, and executive communications skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific and business concepts into compelling narratives for diverse audiences.

·Proven ability to build trusted partnerships, influence without authority, and lead cross-functional initiatives in a highly matrixed organization.

·Experience using audience insights, analytics, and measurement to improve communications effectiveness and demonstrate business impact.

·Strong business acumen, executive presence, intellectual curiosity, and a passion for scientific innovation and emerging technologies.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
