Since shipping our first product we have grown steadily, and the software that drives the Chamber is now at the center of what comes next.\nThis role offers hands-on ownership, room to grow into technical leadership, and a direct hand in shaping how the Chamber works for the people who use it.\nWhat is this role and why does it exist?\nThis role centers on Linux systems software for the Chamber: building and owning the application-level software that runs on embedded Linux and interfaces with hardware over common serial and bus protocols - the software layer that sits above the firmware and drives the product. You'll occasionally reach up the stack into frontend work as well, giving you end-to-end understanding of the system.\nAt the senior level, you are a technical owner in this layer. You help make the architectural calls, set the standard for code quality and testing, and serve as a go-to person when a hardware-software problem needs solving. You'll work closely with the hardware team, OT partners, and the rest of the software team, and you'll help level up teammates who are earlier in their careers.\nResponsibilities\nOwn the design and development of Chamber application software on embedded Linux, including hardware communication over serial and bus protocols\nLead architectural decisions for our microservices-based platform and drive them through to implementation\nDefine and uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, and deployment\nAct as the technical escalation point for complex customer and field issues\nMaintain and occasionally extend early-gen Chamber software\nContribute to frontend work as needed to ship complete features\nCollaborate with hardware, operations, and customer experience teammates to deliver end-to-end solutions\nSkills to Excel\n Systems Thinking: Deep understanding of how software, operating system, and hardware interact, and where problems tend to hide \n Technical Judgment: Makes sound architectural tradeoffs and can explain them clearly \n Ownership: Takes responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks; follows problems through to resolution \n Attention to Detail: Organized and methodical in development, testing, and debugging \n Continuous Learning: Stays current and curious across languages, tools, and patterns \n Customer Focus: Understands how technical decisions affect the people using the product \n Communication: Works well across disciplines and translates between hardware, software, and business needs \n Comfortable Multitasking: Manages multiple priorities and shifts context without losing the thread \n Team Collaboration: Works effectively in a small, cross-disciplinary team; enjoys helping others grow and gives clear, constructive feedback \nRequirements\nWhat technical knowledge do you need to perform in your role?\nRequired\nStrong proficiency in Go, C, or C++, and at least one high-level language (Python, JavaScript, or similar)\nHands-on experience interfacing software with hardware over serial or bus protocols (for example Modbus, I2C, SPI, RS-485, or similar)\nDeep familiarity with Linux environments, the command line, and system-level debugging\nExperience designing and shipping production software in a microservice or distributed architecture\nExperience with Git and modern CI/CD practices\nUnderstanding of software development lifecycle and testing practices\nPreferred\nExperience with MQTT or other IoT communication protocols\nExperience with Docker and containerized deployments on embedded or edge hardware\nFamiliarity with Debian-based Linux systems\nExperience with Next.js, React, and TypeScript\nFamiliarity with shell scripting (Bash)\nFamiliarity with a project tracking tool (Asana, Linear, Jira, or similar)\nFamiliarity with AI-collaboration tools and agents\nQualifications\nMust haves\n5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with meaningful time spent on Linux-based systems\nNice to haves\nPrevious experience in an embedded Linux, IoT, robotics, industrial automation, or connected hardware role\nPrevious experience with real-time or safety-conscious systems\nContributions to open-source or personal projects demonstrating depth in systems software\nBenefits\nPay, Location, Hours\nPay range: $125,000 - $160,000\nBenefits: 80% health, dental, and vision covered.\nFlexible paid time off.\nLocation: Hybrid in the Asheville, NC area.
