The position is responsible for ensuring customer and contractual requirements are accurately interpreted, translated into executable engineering requirements, and delivered in accordance with applicable codes, quality standards, schedules, and project commitments.\nWorking closely with the Project Manager, this individual will effectively function as the technical project manager, owning the engineering and technical coordination required to move projects successfully from contract review through procurement, fabrication, testing, and final delivery.\n\nThe Opportunity\nThe Project Engineer will establish and maintain the technical baseline for assigned projects, ensuring Engineering, Quality, Procurement, and Production remain aligned with customer specifications, applicable codes, and contractual requirements.\nThis is not primarily a mechanical design or drafting position. It is a hands-on project engineering role requiring the ability to understand complex technical requirements, coordinate multiple disciplines, resolve manufacturing and quality issues, and make sound engineering decisions in support of project execution.\n\nKey Responsibilities\nReview customer technical specifications, scopes of work, drawings, purchase orders, codes, standards, and contractual requirements.\nDevelop a thorough understanding of project technical requirements during the contract review and project planning stages.\nPrepare Manufacturing and Inspection Test Plans (MITPs) in collaboration with Engineering, Production, and Quality.\nDevelop and review technical specifications and scopes of work for suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring customer, quality, regulatory, and code requirements are appropriately flowed down.\nAct as a key technical interface between Project Management, Engineering, Procurement, Quality Assurance/Quality Control, Production, customers, suppliers, and external design authorities.\nDevelop and maintain engineering deliverable schedules and monitor critical technical milestones.\nIdentify and resolve technical issues that could affect project cost, schedule, quality, compliance, or manufacturability.\nLead technical risk identification and support the development of appropriate mitigation strategies.\nParticipate in customer technical meetings, project reviews, and design reviews as required.\nCoordinate customer technical comments, engineering responses, and approvals to support production schedules and project milestones.\nReview, evaluate, and disposition Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and other technical discrepancies in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and customer requirements.\nPrepare Corrective Action Reports (CARs) for significant or recurring technical issues.\nProvide practical, technically sound responses to shop-floor engineering questions while minimizing disruption to production schedules.\nDevelop test procedures and operating manuals for applicable project requirements.\nParticipate in design reviews and provide practical recommendations regarding testing, manufacturability, and execution requirements.\nIdentify special or supplementary requirements for materials, equipment, and services and ensure these requirements are incorporated into procurement packages.\nPrepare and review engineering calculations for customer projects, capital projects, and quality-related requirements.\nCoordinate with external design authorities as required to support technical acceptance, Professional Engineer review, and certification.\nReview fabrication drawings for compliance with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and project requirements.\nPrepare Design Deviation Requests (DDRs), Concession Applications (CAs), and related technical documentation.\nMaintain appropriate configuration control throughout project execution.\nMaintain accurate and complete engineering project documentation to support manufacturing, audits, customer deliverables, and project closeout.\nQualifications\nBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.\n8+ years of progressive engineering experience, ideally within nuclear, heavy manufacturing, fabrication, pressure vessel, power generation, or another highly regulated industrial environment.\nNuclear industry experience is strongly preferred.\nEIT or Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with Professional Engineers Ontario is preferred.\nStrong understanding of project engineering practices within a manufacturing or fabrication environment.\nSound knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and manufacturing processes.\nExperience interpreting engineering drawings, technical specifications, purchase orders, codes, standards, and customer requirements.\nWorking knowledge of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code requirements and related standards, including ASME Sections II, III and VIII, CSA N285, CSA N299 and B51, is a strong asset.\nExperience reviewing and dispositioning NCRs and preparing deviations, concessions, corrective actions, or similar engineering documentation.\nExperience developing technical specifications, scopes of work, test procedures, engineering reports, and supplier technical requirements.\nAbility to review engineering calculations and technical documentation for completeness and readiness for Professional Engineer review.\nStrong understanding of material, equipment, fabrication, and procurement specifications.\nSolidWorks and PDM experience is considered an asset.\nStrong Microsoft Office skills, including Excel for engineering calculations and technical data analysis.\nWhat You Bring\nYou are a technically strong mechanical engineer who understands how engineering decisions affect procurement, fabrication, quality, testing, and ultimately project delivery. You are comfortable working directly with manufacturing teams and can translate complex customer and regulatory requirements into practical solutions.\nYou bring strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple technical priorities in a deadline-driven project environment. Just as importantly, you can communicate effectively with engineers, project managers, quality professionals, production personnel, suppliers, customers, and senior stakeholders.\nYou understand that successful project engineering requires more than producing technical documentation-it requires maintaining technical alignment across the entire project team and resolving issues before they affect quality, cost, schedule, or customer commitments.\nIf you are an experienced Project Engineer looking to apply your mechanical engineering expertise within complex, highly regulated manufacturing projects, Aplin welcomes the opportunity to speak with you.\nAt Aplin - together with our brands CompuStaff, Impact Recruitment, and Vantix Systems - we connect great people with great organizations across North America.
