This is a unique opportunity for a Professional Engineer to become the company’s primary in-house engineering authority, supporting its Calgary and Red Deer operations while playing a key role in establishing and developing an internal engineering function. Please note, this is an on-site role with some flexibility, located in Red Deer, AB, with Calgary also being considered.\nWorking closely with the manufacturing, production, estimating, and operations teams, the successful candidate will take ownership of structural design, engineering calculations, drawing reviews, and technical assessments across a diverse range of precast concrete and underground infrastructure products. The individual will also provide technical guidance during the estimating and tendering process, ensure designs are practical and manufacturable, and help establish engineering procedures, standards, and best practices. Over time, this role offers an excellent opportunity to build and lead an internal engineering team.\nKey Responsibilities\nServe as the primary in-house Civil / Structural Engineer supporting the company’s Calgary and Red Deer operations\nTake ownership of structural designs, engineering calculations, drawing reviews, and technical assessments across a variety of precast concrete products\nReview, stamp, and sign off on applicable engineering work in accordance with APEGA requirements\nProvide structural engineering expertise for products including burial vaults, underground utility structures, concrete pipe systems, and other precast concrete products\nSupport the Estimating team by providing technical guidance, reviewing project requirements, and assisting with tendering and project evaluations\nWork closely with production and manufacturing teams to ensure engineering designs are practical, manufacturable, cost-effective, and compliant with applicable standards\nEstablish and implement engineering procedures, standards, processes, and best practices as the organization transitions engineering capabilities in-house\nProvide technical assessments and engineering solutions to support product development, manufacturing, and operational requirements\nMaintain a strong presence on the plant floor and build effective working relationships with production and operations personnel\nCoordinate with external engineering consultants where required and gradually transition applicable engineering responsibilities internally\nCollaborate with internal stakeholders on project coordination, process improvements, and technical problem-solving\nContribute to the development and growth of the internal engineering function, with the potential to hire and mentor engineers and drafters as the team expands\nQualifications\nProfessional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with active registration through APEGA\nStrong background in structural engineering and reinforced concrete design\nDemonstrated experience with structural design, engineering calculations, drawing review, and technical assessments\nExperience working with concrete, precast concrete, infrastructure, manufacturing, or construction projects is highly desirable\nPrecast concrete experience is considered a strong asset\nExperience working within a structural or civil engineering consulting firm, concrete manufacturing organization, infrastructure company, or construction environment is considered an asset\nStrong understanding of applicable engineering standards, codes, and regulatory requirements\nAbility to provide practical engineering solutions that consider both structural integrity and manufacturing requirements\nStrong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with Engineering, Estimating, Production, and Operations teams\nHighly organized and self-motivated, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities independently\nComfortable working in a manufacturing and plant-floor environment and engaging directly with operational teams\nAbility to balance technical engineering responsibilities with stakeholder management, project coordination, and business needs\nDemonstrated interest in developing leadership capabilities and building an internal engineering function is considered a strong asset\nAt Aplin - together with our brands CompuStaff, Impact Recruitment, and Vantix Systems - we connect great people with great organizations across North America.
