We are an in-office company, and our expectation is that full-time employees primarily work from their Applied Intuition office 5 days a week. However, we also recognize the importance of flexibility and trust our employees to manage their schedules responsibly. This may include occasional remote work, starting the day with morning meetings from home before heading to the office, or leaving earlier when needed to accommodate family commitments. This in-office expectation does not apply to contractor positions

About the role

We are looking for a Product Counsel Lead to join our legal team. This is a uniquely strategic role with a mix of both internal and external-facing responsibilities in an area of increasing importance for Applied Intuition. In short, this role will make an impact. You will report to our General Counsel and primarily support Product, Engineering, and Marketing to provide strategic legal guidance on a wide range of issues, including integrations, privacy, copyright, accessibility, and emerging technologies. You will also have opportunities to expand your role as part of a small legal team in a high growth start up.

Our ideal candidate is a business-minded lawyer and tech geek who is focused on execution, prepared to lead on important projects, and comfortable making substantive and creative decisions. The role will require a high degree of self-sufficiency but also someone who enjoys being part of a supportive team dedicated to providing top legal service to our internal clients. You must be willing to roll up your sleeves and be comfortable working in ambiguity as you will be operating in the dynamic intersection of law and new technologies.

At Applied Intuition, you will:

  • Be a trusted advisor to the Product, Engineering, Design, and Business Teams and help them navigate a range of issues related to Autonomy and AI, including privacy, data protection, accessibility, and consumer protections

  • Lead and support cross-functional projects related to compliance, safety, and IP protection, ensuring all legal requirements are integrated into product development workflows

  • Review product integrations to ensure compliance with contractual obligations, data protection laws, intellectual property rights, and other relevant legal and regulatory requirements

  • Translate legal advice into actionable guidance for cutting-edge product and engineering teams, often under tight deadlines

  • Manage our patenting program, facilitate invention harvesting sessions, and advise on IP strategy

  • Build systems, policies, and processes, including guides and playbooks, that address risk and ensure compliance while supporting efficient innovation

  • Review and edit customer contracts, in-bound contracts, marketing materials, and other external-facing documents, ensuring they are compliant, user-friendly, and aligned with Applied Intuition’s policies

  • Proactively manage other duties that may arise as part of a small legal team in a high growth start-up

  • Collaborate with external sources, regulators, and industry groups as needed to stay current on global legal and regulatory developments specifically relevant to Autonomy and AI

  • Assist with M&A transactions

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Experience working with internal engineering, product, design, security, privacy, and marketing teams throughout the product development life cycle, advising on regulatory requirements and how to mitigate risks for new technologies

  • Experience counseling business partners on domestic and international laws, regulations, and best practices for implementing and ensuring ongoing compliance

  • Demeanor to thrive in a fast-paced, execution-focused environment, requiring exceptional organizational skills, juggling priorities, and adhering to strict deadlines

  • Demonstrated ability to advance large, complex projects

  • 8+ years' of law firm and/or in-house experience, preferably in technology companies, with the activities described above

  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school and active membership in one state bar

Nice to have:

  • Experience with some combination of law firm and in-house work

  • Computer science or engineering degree - while a science or technical degree is not a prerequisite for this job, a passion for technologies is

  • Familiarity with machine learning, autonomy, generative models, and products

  • Privacy certifications (CIPP-E, CIPP-US, CIPM), or desire to obtain one
