We design, build, and operate nuclear plants directly alongside the facilities they power. With no reactor science or new fuel to invent, we have no reason to stall. We are the first fully integrated nuclear power provider built to deploy now. Founded by a team of engineers and operators who built the launch sites, test complexes, and factories behind SpaceX, designed and commercialized nuclear reactors, and ran billion-dollar asset portfolios, the team is now focused on clean power deployment. Applied Atomics is backed by Alpaca VC, Transition, and Morpheus Ventures.\nAbout the role:\nApplied Atomics is seeking a Nuclear Engineer to own and drive the technical development of our reactor core, fuel, and associated nuclear systems. As one of our first nuclear engineering hires, you will define the nuclear architecture of our system, lead early-stage reactor and fuel design efforts, and act as the primary technical interface with our reactor-licensing partners. Your work will span reactor physics, core design, neutronics modeling, shielding, nuclear safety, fuel performance, and design adaptation of licensed reactor technology. \nThis role is ideal for someone who wants broad responsibility, thrives in a fast-paced hardware environment, and is excited to build and eventually lead a world-class nuclear engineering team. \nWhy we need you\nWe are transitioning nuclear energy from a theoretical science into a practical reality, and that requires practical problem-solvers. We need engineers who are eager to take direct responsibility for their work and see it through to completion. Your role will be critical in transforming complex designs into safe, reliable, and operational power plants that will operate for decades to come. \nWhat you will do\nNuclear Design & Analysis \nOwn reactor physics, neutronics, shielding, and nuclear design activities from concept through deployment. \nDevelop and refine core design, reactivity coefficients, kinetics parameters, feedback mechanisms, and neutron energy spectra. \nPerform radiation transport, shielding, and criticality safety analyses. \nConduct transient and accident-scenario evaluations to support design decisions and safety basis development. \nPerform dose consequence and source-term calculations (normal operations + beyond design basis events). \nModeling & Simulation \nBuild and maintain reactor physics, shielding, and fuel performance models. \nComputer energy deposition distributions, power profiles, isotopic depletion, and fuel cycle analyses. \nVerify model assumptions and assess margin/conservatism across analyses. \nLead Verification & Validation (V&V) efforts for nuclear analysis tools and workflows. \nFuel, Materials, & Reactor Integration \nSupport fuel form selection, cladding and structural material evaluation, and fuel performance modeling. \nContribute to reactor mechanical layout, shielding design, and core structural features. \nWork with thermal-hydraulic engineers to ensure robust coupling between neutronics and thermal-fluid analyses. \nPartner & Licensing Interface \nCollaborate with licensed reactor technology providers to adapt designs for Applied Atomics’ requirements, constraints, and integration needs. \nWork with regulatory and licensing teams on technical inputs to safety basis, design certification, and licensing documentation. \nTechnical Leadership \nServer as the nuclear technical authority within a multidisciplinary, fast-paced engineering organization. \nBuild out processes, methods, and eventually a team for nuclear analysis and reactor design. \nAdditional Responsibilities \nTake end-to-end responsibility for your projects, from initial concepts through to deployment and ongoing operations\nPartner closely with our multidisciplinary team of experienced engineers to tackle complex, cross-functional challenges\nDeliver high-quality work steadily and safely, ensuring every solution meets our rigorous quality standards while also for solving scalability issues in the future\nContinually improve our internal engineering processes, documentation, and tools to support the team as we scale\nWhat you bring to the table\nNeed to haves: \nBachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or related field.\n4+ years of nuclear engineering experience ( or 2+ years w/ MS).\nDemonstrated experience with radiation transport and reactor physics modeling tools (OpenMC, MCNP, Serpent, SCALE, etc.).\nExperience with reactor design, core physics, criticality, and/or shielding.\nBasic understanding of thermal-hydraulics and coupled neutronics-thermal models.\nFamiliarity with CAD tools (NX, SolidWorks, Creo, etc.).\nAbility to operate across multiple cross-functional teams.\nStrong written and oral communication skills; able to explain complex topics simply.\nSelf-starter, ownership mentality, and ability to drive tasks from concept to completion.\nNice-to-haves:\nMaster’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or related field. \nExperience with advanced analysis tools such as: \nOpenMC, Serpent, MCNP, SCALE, Attila4MC \nRELAP, Trace, MOOSE, Pronghorn, GRIFFIN, etc. \nExperience with dose consequence tools such as MAACS or NRC RADTRAN. \nHands-on hardware, prototyping, or test experience (core mockups, shielding tests, irradiation programs, etc.). \nExperience with fuel performance analysis (FRAPCON, BISON, FAST, etc.). \nUnderstanding of nuclear materials, irradiation effects, corrosion, and structural degradation. \nExperience with finite element simulation (ANSYS, Abaqus, etc.). \nKnowledge of relevant regulatory standards (ASME, NRC regs., 10 CFR 50, etc.). \nPrior experience with FOAK (first-of-a-kind) or advanced reactor development programs. \n BENEFITS & PERKS FOR ELIGIBLE EMPLOYEES \nSubstantial incentive stock plan for all full-time employees. \nMedical / Vision / Dental (details forthcoming). \nFlexible PTO policy. \nHybrid and remote work options depending on role. \nOther benefits to be announced at offer stage. \nWe are an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, age, national origin, disability status, genetic information, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship at this time. This position involves access to technology that is subject to U.S. export controls. Any job offer made will be contingent upon the applicant’s capacity to serve in compliance with U.S. export controls. \nRemote pay range\n$147,500—$195,322 USD","description_format":"text","description_chars":6711,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":4,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Energy & Utilities","Nuclear Energy","Nuclear Engineering"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-25T20:23:29Z"}],"liveness":{"score":26,"band":"fade","label":"Fading","p_open":1,"p_active":0.73,"p_room":0.36,"age_days":90,"expected_fill_days":46,"reasons":["conf:2","win:tail","crowd:"],"computed_at":"2026-09-28T05:45:00Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":195322,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/appliedatomics-nuclear-engineer-lead","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/appliedatomics-nuclear-engineer-lead.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-09-29T04:42:02Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":4454,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":546,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-09-30T00:00:00Z"}}}
