Role accountabilities:

The Construction Field Engineer will:

  • Perform regular site surveillance and construction observations to verify that contractor activities are carried out in accordance with IFC drawings, project specifications, approved shop drawings, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Monitor major civil, structural, mechanical, utility, electrical, architectural, and landscaping activities, including the installation of track infrastructure, communications systems, transit signals, and associated piping infrastructure.
  • Observe the installation of overhead catenary systems, including power distribution, lighting, cable containment, grounding, traction power systems, and related equipment installations.
  • Assist in identifying potential clashes or installation issues and facilitate coordination between the design and construction teams.
  • Document field observations in accordance with Construction Phase Services procedures, maintaining accurate inspection records, including hold points and witness points identified in Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
  • Prepare detailed site surveillance reports, including written observations and photographic records of construction progress.
  • Maintain inspection and surveillance tracking tools to support the CPS team in monitoring construction progress, inspection status, documentation requirements, and outstanding technical actions.
  • Identify potential non-conformances or design-related issues and communicate them to the CPS Lead, Engineer of Record, and broader project team.
  • Coordinate with contractor representatives and Professionals of Record (PORs) to facilitate site inspections and support the resolution of construction-related submittals, including Requests for Information (RFIs), Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), and Field Change Requests.
  • Support the design team, as needed, in reviewing shop drawings, material submittals, and Inspection and Test Plans as they relate to field implementation.
  • Participate in site coordination meetings, construction progress meetings, and technical discussions related to building systems and infrastructure interfaces.
  • Promote Arcadis’ commitment to safety, quality, and environmental stewardship throughout all site activities.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Diploma or degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, or Construction Management.
  • Minimum of 7 to 10 years of relevant experience in construction inspection, construction observation, or field engineering on major infrastructure projects.
  • Mandatory experience on rail or transit projects, including transit stations, underground facilities, or maintenance facilities.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards, including CSA standards, Ontario Building Code (OBC), Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC), CROR, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards where applicable, OHSA, and relevant municipal and provincial requirements.
  • Strong technical understanding of construction processes and work procedures for major infrastructure projects.
  • Experience coordinating across civil, structural, architectural, and rail systems interfaces is considered an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear technical documentation and site reports.
  • Demonstrated client-facing skills and the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with digital and project delivery tools, including BIM, Bluebeam, MS Office, project scheduling software, and other industry-standard engineering and construction tools.
