This critical role is responsible for the comprehensive review, editing, and project management of all written materials destined for public release, applying an expert command of language and style, a deep understanding of medical and military contexts, and the ability to manage a complex clearance and approval process.\nThe Authored Works Review (Editor) role requires a self-starter, proactive problem solver and action-oriented team player with previous experience in professional editing, copyediting, or technical writing within a federal, military, or healthcare environment. This position needs an individual that is committed to providing superior service, poised under pressure and has a positive and flexible attitude.\nThis is a contingent hire position. Offers will be contingent upon client approval and ability to meet security requirements.\nOnsite work in Bethesda, Maryland, is required.\nPrimary Responsibilities\nManage the end-to-end editorial lifecycle for all public-facing written materials, including articles, reports, web content, and leadership messaging.\nDevelop and manage a comprehensive editorial calendar, tracking documents through multiple stages of review and ensuring all deadlines are met.\nPerform detailed reviews, edits, and proofreading of all content for clarity, accuracy, grammar, and strict compliance with Associated Press (AP) Style, command style guides, and Department of War (DoW) regulations.\nConduct rigorous fact-checking and source verification for all claims, statistics, and medical information, working closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) across clinical and administrative departments to ensure unimpeachable accuracy.\nServe as the central point of contact for the written review process, coordinating feedback and revisions between authors, SMEs, legal counsel, and public affairs leadership to achieve consensus and final approval.\nLead the development, maintenance, and enforcement of a comprehensive organizational style guide that ensures a consistent and professional voice across all communications.\nManage the final clearance process, packaging and presenting finalized documents to the senior Public Affairs Officer for final approval before public release.\nApply HIPAA and Protected Health Information (PHI) safeguarding principles rigorously across all reviewed and edited content.\nManage multi-author publications and a high volume of concurrent review actions in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.\nMinimum Qualifications\nBachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field.\n5+ years of demonstrable experience in professional editing, copyediting, or technical writing, preferably with direct experience reviewing medical research, public policy, or military doctrine.\nEditing samples will be required.\nExceptional and demonstrable command of English grammar, punctuation, and Associated Press (AP) Style.\nProven experience in healthcare communications, Military public affairs, or a similar regulated, high-visibility environment.\nThorough understanding of and ability to rigorously apply the principles of safeguarding HIPAA and PHI.\nProject management experience, specifically in managing an editorial calendar and multi-author publications.\nMeticulous attention to detail and an unwavering ethical commitment to accuracy and source verification.\nAbility to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance (Tier II, non-critical sensitive position).\nLegal authorization to work in the U.S.\nDesired Qualifications\nStrong critical thinking, analytical and time management skills.\nProven ability to organize, prioritize and work well with others.\nAbility to communicate thoughts, ideas and solutions logically both written and orally.\nAbility to stay calm under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.\nAbility to receive feedback from clients and implement changes quickly and effectively.\nAbility to get up to speed quickly on complex issues.\nDesire to work in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment.\nPhysical Requirements\nPending -
