AstraZeneca is a British-Swedish pharmaceutical company formed in 1999 by the merger of Astra of Sweden and Zeneca of the United Kingdom, and now one of the largest drug makers in the world by revenue. Its portfolio is concentrated in oncology with Tagrisso, Imfinzi and Enhertu, alongside cardiovascular, renal and metabolic products including Farxiga, respiratory and immunology medicines, and a rare disease business built on the acquisition of Alexion. Headquartered in Cambridge in England and listed in London, Stockholm and New York, it reports in United States dollars.

Are you an experienced organic chemist with a passion for High-Throughput Experimentation (HTE), laboratory automation and innovative synthetic chemistry? Are you excited by challenging scientific questions, creative problem-solving and state-of-the-art methodology and equipment? Then you might be the one we are looking for!

Join AstraZeneca and play a key role in the automation-enabled development and optimisation of reactions and processes supporting medicinal chemistry and discovery process development. By combining your expertise in organic chemistry with high-throughput experimentation and advanced laboratory automation, you will help enable and accelerate drug discovery programmes across our BioPharmaceuticals small-molecule portfolio.

We are seeking a highly motivatedSenior Scientist to join our Adaptive Chemistry Team within Discovery Sciences. The role is based at our vibrant R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden.

What you’ll do?

In this laboratory-based role, you will use laboratory automation and high-throughput experimentation to identify and optimise reactions and processes that support medicinal chemistry teams and discovery process development activities. Applying your expertise in synthetic chemistry, retrosynthetic analysis, route design and literature research, you will identify high-value chemistry solutions and use creative problem-solving to address project challenges.

You will translate project questions into effective screening, optimisation and workflow strategies, balancing speed, scientific quality, material requirements and practical feasibility. Depending on the scientific question, you will flexibly combine automation-enabled experimentation with single experiments.

You will plan, prioritise and perform your own laboratory work, using scientific judgement and your knowledge of chemistry to deliver reliable and timely results. You will analyse reaction mixtures using modern high-throughput and data-rich analytical methods, purify compounds using techniques appropriate to the scale and purpose of the work, and communicate results, conclusions and recommendations clearly and concisely. You will also contribute to the conceptualisation and development of new chemistry-focused automated workflows that improve ways of working and enhance scientific productivity.

As part of the Adaptive Chemistry Team, you will actively apply and share your chemistry and technology expertise within the team and across the Department. You will contribute to capability building, support knowledge-sharing and help colleagues make effective use of automation and high-throughput approaches.

Working and collaborating closely within the team and with colleagues in medicinal chemistry, early chemical development and global high-throughput experimentation, you will share knowledge and deliver high-quality scientific impact.

Essential for the role:

  • A Ph.D in a relevant chemistry discipline or a MSc degree with equivalent relevant experience

  • Strong knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry, modern catalytic chemistry and recent literature

  • > 3 years practical experience in the laboratory

  • Proven track record of high-quality scientific delivery

  • Strong interest in chemistry automation and high throughput experimentation

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in project teams

Desirable for the role:

  • Experience working with chemistry automation and/or high throughput experimentation

  • Specialist level knowledge within relevant chemistry technology (e.g. photoredox chemistry, cross-electrophile coupling, hydrogenation reactions)

  • An understanding of medicinal chemistry and / or discovery process chemistry

  • Experience handling large data sets and knowledge FAIR and AI ready data
