We are looking for a laboratory-based Senior Scientist, Process Engineer to lead technical development activities, shape manufacturing processes, and contribute to the successful delivery of oral and parenteral medicines.\nPharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) is an organisation that turns brilliant science into actual medicines that help millions of people. We work across the entire value chain, designing and delivering active ingredients, formulations and devices for new medicines and providing expert technical support to all AstraZeneca’s commercial drug substances and products to ensure we successfully supply medicines to patients.\nGlobal Product Development (GPD) sits within PT&D and is a multidisciplinary organisation that brings together scientific, technical, quality, operational, and support functions to develop and advance drug products throughout the development lifecycle.\nBased at AstraZeneca's Gothenburg site, you will join the GPD Process Technology and Engineering Unit and play a key role in developing robust manufacturing processes for oral and parenteral drug products in late-stage development. Working at the interface of science and engineering, you will combine hands-on laboratory experimentation with modelling, simulation and digital approaches to strengthen process understanding and support successful commercial manufacturing.\nAccountabilities\nWorking in a highly collaborative environment, you will partner closely with formulation scientists, engineers, modelling and simulation specialists, and manufacturing experts to solve complex technical challenges. Through your scientific expertise and engineering judgement, you will contribute to developing manufacturing processes that are well understood, controlled, and capable of meeting long-term commercial and patient needs. You will take ownership of technical activities, influence development strategies and help advance the application of digital approaches within drug product development.\nKey accountabilities include:\nLead engineering activities supporting the design, development and optimisation of robust manufacturing processes for oral and parenteral drug products. \nDesign, execute and interpret laboratory studies to build process understanding and support drug product development programmes. \nContribute to cross-functional teams developing, scaling and transferring commercial manufacturing processes for oral solid dosage forms and parenteral products. \nApply modelling, simulation and digital tools to enhance process understanding, guide experimental strategies and accelerate development activities. \nDrive the adoption and continued development of digital approaches relevant to pharmaceutical process development. \nEstablish strong collaborative relationships across Global Product Development, including the Modelling & Simulation team, to maximise the value of data-driven development approaches. \nIndependently plan and deliver technical activities to agreed timelines and quality standards, applying scientific expertise and sound engineering judgement to interpret results and adapt development strategies as needed. \nContribute to scientific and technology networks, maintaining awareness of emerging technologies and new developments relevant to pharmaceutical product development. \nEssential Skills/Experience:\nPhD in Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics or a related scientific discipline, or an MSc with significant industrial experience in pharmaceutical process development. \nHands-on laboratory experience, including experimental design, data generation and interpretation to support process understanding and development. \nDemonstrated experience in pharmaceutical process development within CMC, including the design, development and optimisation of drug product manufacturing processes for oral solid dosage forms and/or parenteral products. \nStrong understanding of CMC regulatory requirements, with experience preparing regulatory documentation to support clinical development and/or marketing applications. \nExperience applying modelling, simulation and digital technologies to support process understanding, development and decision-making. \nStrong scientific problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyse data, interpret results, and make sound technical decisions. \nStrong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams. \nAbility to work effectively in a global, cross-functional environment and build strong collaborative relationships across disciplines. \nExcellent written and spoken English. \nDesirable Skills/Experience:\nExperience leading engineering work packages, process development activities or technology transfer projects within pharmaceutical development. \nExperience of commercial process development and technology transfer for new chemical entities. \nExperience of continuous processing in a pharmaceutical environment. \nKnowledge of GMP, Process Safety, Data Integrity and Change Control requirements. \nExperience working with automated manufacturing systems and digitalised process development environments. \nExperience working with CDMOs and outsourced development activities. \nExperience exploring or applying AI-enabled tools within pharmaceutical development. \nAt AstraZeneca, we combine science, engineering and innovation to solve some of the most complex challenges in pharmaceutical development.
