The group provides legal advice and counsel on state and federal laws, applicable regulations, and Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) and ASU policies impacting the university; assists with the development of educational training programs for administrators, faculty, and staff; manages a significant and varied workload including working on multiple unrelated matters concurrently and completing complex projects both independently and with minimal direction; utilizes excellent judgment and discretion as well as exceptional integrity and research and communication skills. In performing these duties, the individual will provide legal advice utilizing discretion and professionalism, and in compliance with the highest ethical standards applicable to attorneys serving public institutions.\nThis position interacts regularly with senior level administration and with state, local, and federal regulatory offices. Assignments will be based on university needs, candidate experience, and office workload.\nFor more information about the Office of General Counsel visit our web site at www.asu.edu/counsel.\nEssential Duties\nAbility to work collegially, professionally, and in a tactful manner with University stakeholders, including providing clear and effective communication on legal matters. \nDrafts, negotiates, and reviews agreements and other legal documents relating to the work of the transactional group for various University offices and departments.\nProvides legal counsel and prepares legal opinions and advice for administrative offices and academic units based on an analysis of applicable federal and state law and regulations, ABOR policies and University policies.\nAdvises on regulatory compliance with federal and state laws, including those governing business transactions managed by the transactional group.\nRepresents ASU in negotiations, administrative proceedings, and legal disputes.\nResearches and analyzes a wide variety of laws, regulations, legislation, legislative history and policies; studies proposed or existing legislation for implications to the University\nAssists in development and presents a variety of preventive law programs for the University.\nCollaborates with outside legal counsel on specialized matters as needed.\nRepresents the Office of General Counsel at meetings and conferences, as required.\nMaintains effective working relationships with appropriate regulatory, legislative and other legal resources.\nAssumes other duties as may be assigned.\nDesired Qualifications\nEvidence of a J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school and six (6) years of experience as a practicing attorney with a focus in higher education, complex commercial transactions, business formation and structures, global and national operations, and/or public finance.\nExperience working in a complex, high volume environment.\nExperience in the active practice of law which is current and continuous and with a demonstrated ability to structure, negotiate, and draft complex agreements relevant to a complex and entrepreneurial public research university.\nEvidence of strong, effective communication skills.\nKnowledge of legal issues affecting large public research universities, including regulatory compliance, contractual relations, and policy development.\nWorking Environment\nWork is performed in a standard office environment subject to prolonged periods of sitting and operation of computer equipment requiring keyboarding.\nTravel to other offices at the Tempe campus and other ASU campuses or locations is required.\nSome out-of-state and overnight travel is required.\nDepartment Statement: The Office of General Counsel is located in the ASU Fulton Center, at 300 E.
