Position Overview

Athena is seeking a Vice President (“VP”) of Accounting to support the family office enterprise, our principals, and affiliated non-profit organizations. This role reports to the Director of Tax.

This is a hands-on, outcomes-driven role requiring maniacal attention to detail, focus on consistently delivering high-quality work, and superb follow-through. This role is responsible for managing the end-to-end accounting lifecycle, and requires strong judgment under ambiguity, ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality, creative problem-solving, and the ability to think on your feet.

Key responsibilities:

Individual, Entity, & Investment Accounting

  • Manage individual capital accounts, distributions, and contributions, as needed, for each principal
  • Track and reconcile balance sheets, including illiquid and alternative asset holdings
  • Prepare customized reporting packages reflecting each principal’s unique entity structure and reporting preferences
  • Coordinate with tax, finance, and investment teams to reflect portfolio activity accurately in the books
  • Reconcile investment activity against custodian and administrator statements
  • Account for SPVs created by the family office; manage capital calls, carried interest, and fee calculations. Track ownership percentages and allocations

Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations

  • Prepare and review consolidated and entity-level financial statements across multiple principals’ and their entities, trusts, charitable organizations, and investment vehicles
  • Maintain general ledger integrity across a complex multi-entity chart of accounts (personal, trust, LLC, and SPV structures)
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes for the family office enterprise, our principals, and affiliated non-profit organizations
  • Ensure accurate intercompany eliminations and reconciliations across related entities
  • Manage onboarding and offboarding new entities and principals into the accounting infrastructure

Cash Management & Treasury

  • Monitor cash positions across entities and coordinate funding for capital calls, distributions, and personal and entity operating expenses
  • Maintain banking relationships and reconcile multiple bank and custodial accounts
  • Develop, document, and automate cash management and treasury process, leveraging technology where appropriate

Tax Support

  • Support the Director of Tax with K-1 preparation
  • Maintain records necessary for tax compliance across LLCs, trusts, SPVs, and other vehicles
  • Assist with tracking tax basis and other tax attributes tied to investment structures

Compliance & Controls

  • Maintain accounting policies and internal controls consistent with SEC recordkeeping requirements (e.g., Rule 204-2 books and records)
  • Support audit and compliance reviews with organized, audit-ready documentation
  • Ensure segregation of duties and proper approval workflows for disbursements

Other

  • Collaborate with tax, finance, property management, and investments to ensure accurate, timely financial data flows across services lines, providing high-quality service and deliverables to our principals and affiliated organizations
  • Support the Athena leadership team with ad-hoc financial analysis and special projects
  • Maintain and improve accounting systems, workflows, reporting, and templates to scale with growth in principals and entities
  • Document accounting procedures to support consistency
  • Manage third-party vendors (e.g., bookkeepers) that support the accounting and reporting lifecycles and deliverables

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. Master’s degree a plus but not required
  • 7-10+ years of relevant experience, ideally at a professional accounting firm, multi-family office, or related environment
  • CPA required; CFP, CFA, or MST a plus but not required
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and multi-entity/consolidated accounting
  • Experience working across multiple legal entities simultaneously (LLCs, trusts, partnerships, charitable organizations, SPVs)
  • Prior exposure to high-net-worth or ultra-high-net-worth individuals’ personal financial reporting
  • Experience supporting or working alongside tax, finance, and investment teams in a coordinated service model
  • Familiarity with partnership and trust accounting concepts (capital accounts, allocations, K-1s)
  • Advanced Excel skills; comfort building and maintaining complex reporting templates
  • Experience with accounting software (e.g., Sage Intaact or similar) and family office platforms (e.g., Masttro) a plus
  • High discretion, confidentiality, and data sensitive standards expected in a family office environment
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing deadlines across entities and stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills, comfortable interacting directly with principals and external advisors (accountants, legal, tax professionals)
  • High orientation to detail and accuracy, with low tolerance for reporting errors
  • Adaptability to a growing and evolving organization; collaborative mindset and the ability to work cross-functionally to deliver coordinated, white-glove services
