One quantum sensor. A lot of physics to account for. You will build the models that explain what motion does to a precision measurement.\nThe Role\nA quantum gravimeter does not always operate on a stationary optical table. Motion and changing environments affect its measurements, and understanding those effects requires models that can be tested against real sensor data. As a Research Scientist (Simulations and ML), you will develop the physics and simulation methods behind our efforts to understand quantum sensors in motion.\nYour work will span first-principles modeling, statistical signal analysis, experiments designed to resolve mismatches between models and measurements, and AI/ML pipelines for simulation and automation. You will also help connect transfer functions and motion models to sensor fusion and adaptive feedback systems. The goal is to understand noise and sensor behavior well enough to guide sensor design for demanding environments.\nTechnical Context\nWe cool atoms with lasers to near absolute zero to measure tiny changes in gravity. Yes, really. When the sensor is moving, a useful model must account for the physics of the measurement, the motion of the system and how noise appears in the data.\nWhat You Will Do\nDevelop and derive first-principles mathematical models for quantum gravimeters, including dynamic edge cases and approaches based on Feynman paths and optical Bloch equations, where applicable.\nModel how quantum-sensor noise degrades under complex six-axis motion, and derive transfer functions for changing environmental characteristics.\nDesign and run experiments that distinguish real sensor behavior from modeling assumptions, resolving ambiguities between measurements and simulations.\nAnalyze experimental signal characteristics using impulse responses, noise analysis, spectral kurtosis and cross-correlations; assess Cramér-Rao bounds and system observability.\nSupport development of quantum-sensor simulation software for external environments; integrate transfer functions into motion libraries and contribute to sensor-fusion algorithms.\nIntegrate AI/ML pipelines for automation and scaling, and design adaptive closed-loop filters that connect modeled behavior to sensor-control development.\nWhat We Are Looking For\nStrong Python skills for scientific computing, simulation development and statistical analysis.\nExperience building or validating simulations of physical systems, such as high-energy physics, atomic physics, multibody dynamics or IMU sensor fusion.\nStrong foundation in classical mechanics, including inertial and non-inertial reference frames and rotating reference frames.\nAbility to analyze real-world experimental data, characterize noise and reason rigorously about model-to-measurement differences.\nBackground in mathematics, physics, machine learning or control systems, with the analytical depth to work through unfamiliar physical problems.\nStrong first-principles reasoning, problem-solving skills and an interest in difficult technical questions that span physics, computation and real measurements.\nEven Better If\nPhD in a relevant field OR minimum five years of relevant industry experience.\nBackground in cold-atom interferometry and a strong foundation in perturbation theory.\nExperience with motion or localization simulation tools, such as Gazebo.\nExperience modeling physical systems in MATLAB or Mathematica.\nWhat Success Looks Like\nYou can derive a model of a quantum sensor in motion, identify what it predicts about noise and signal behavior, and test those predictions against experimental data. Your analysis helps the team distinguish modeling error from physical effects and informs motion libraries, sensor-fusion methods, adaptive filtering and better sensor designs for demanding environments.\nWorking at Atomionics\nSubsurface intelligence takes more than one discipline. People bring different expertise to the same problem, and what happens in one part of the system shapes the next.\nThe roles are different, but the goal is shared: make subsurface intelligence useful where it matters.\nWhat We Can Offer You\nWork across mathematical physics, scientific computing and experimental sensor data, with a direct connection between your models and how quantum sensors are developed and tested.\nBuild the technology that maps what no one else can see.","description_format":"text","description_chars":4409,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":5,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"phd","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Artificial Intelligence","Quantum Science & Computing","Sensors & Transducers"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-11-03T06:49:56Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":90,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.903,"p_room":1,"age_days":1,"expected_fill_days":23,"reasons":["conf:2","velocity","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-11-05T05:54:30Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/atomionics-research-scientist-simulations-and-ml","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/atomionics-research-scientist-simulations-and-ml.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-11-05T20:36:05Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":92,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-11-06T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":174974},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=174974"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fatomionics-research-scientist-simulations-and-ml"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fatomionics-research-scientist-simulations-and-ml"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fatomionics-research-scientist-simulations-and-ml"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/atomionics-research-scientist-simulations-and-ml\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fatomionics-research-scientist-simulations-and-ml"}],"agent":{"mcp":"https://alion.io/mcp/jobs","mcp_open":"https://alion.io/mcp/open","next":[{"tool":"get_job","arguments":{"id":3666717}},{"tool":"search_jobs","arguments":{"company":"atomionics.com","detail":"compact"}},{"tool":"match_people","arguments":{"job_id":3666717},"note":"people open to offers who fit this vacancy"}],"note":"The same data through MCP tools: https://alion.io/mcp/open needs no sign-in (compact searches, postings, people); https://alion.io/mcp with an Alion account has everything.
