USAMRIID's mission is to provide leading-edge medical\ncapabilities to deter and defend against current and emerging biological\nthreat agents. Each Animal Caretakers 3 works within a team to provide\nhumane care and treatment of research animals. The Animal Caretaker 3\nprovides animal husbandry support in Quarantine, Barrier, ABSL-2,\nABSL-3, and ABSL-4 animal care and use areas. The Animal Caretaker 3\nshall independently select and apply appropriate procedures for the\nsupported tasks. The Animal Caretaker 3 shall assist in providing\nnon-routine care, supporting changes in procedure, and addressing\nproblems. In addition, the Animal Caretaker 3 shall assist or\nindependently perform glassware/cagewash support tasks.\nSchedule: Full-time. Variable hours to include weekends, holidays, and\nemergencies as requested.\nDuties:\n- Contract Employee shall provide animal care and husbandry to the\nanimals during experimental and non-experimental periods IAW SOPs\nand/or protocol. This includes, but is not limited to,\ncleaning/sanitizing the micro- and macroenvironment; transferring\nanimals between cages/restraint devices/jump boxes; providing\nenvironmental enrichment; housing animals in appropriate size and\ntypes of cages; monitoring animals and reporting/documenting\nabnormal conditions or treatment failures; and ensuring food/water\nare available IAW SOPs or protocol. Contract Employees shall work\nindependently IAW SOPs and apply practical knowledge and technical\nexpertise to resolve problems independently and in cooperation with\nother personnel. Contract Employees shall report any SOP deviations\nto the Contract PM as soon as practicable.\n- Contract Employee shall receive, exam, verify (i.e., determine sex),\nmove to designated room and house of all incoming laboratory animals\nIAW SOPs and/or protocol.\n- Contract Employee shall conduct daily cage counts and weekly head\ncounts to the Contract PM IAW SOPs.\n- Contract Employee shall ensure all animals are properly identified\nand associated with specific experiments IAW SOPs.\n- Contract Employee shall transport animals within the facility or\nto/from other facilities IAW SOPs.\n- Contract Employee shall ensure proper room designations and entry\nprocedures and update room entry order IAW SOPs.\n- Contract Employee shall operate animal husbandry equipment and\ndocument operations IAW SOPs.\n- Contract Employee shall store animal husbandry equipment and\nsupplies IAW SOPs.\n- Contract Employee shall observe and document temperature, humidity\nand light levels within animal care and use areas IAW SOPs and\nreport excursions to the Contract PM immediately.\nClearance Requirements: Ability to obtain and maintain a security\nclearance, if required by the facility or research project. Must meet\nall requirements for the BPRP to access ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 containment\nareas. T3 investigation (NACLC/ANACI is acceptable if completed within 5\nyears prior to enrollment). A favorably adjudicated SECRET security\nclearance eligibility, with no access to classified, is required.\nQualifications:\nMinimum Degree Requirements:\nMinimum of an associate degree or equivalent in veterinary technology or a related field.\nEducation and Certification Requirements:\nA minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role within a research environment. A minimum of 3 years veterinary technical experience in support of nonhuman primates in a research setting\nAALAS LAT certification required within 12 months of hire\nFormal training and experience in handling Old World non-human primates, rodents, swine, ferrets, and rabbits\nRequired certification in animal handling and care per the Animal Welfare Act and related guidelines.\nRegistered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) preferred.\nSkills and Qualifications:\nStrong understanding of laboratory animal science and welfare.\nFamiliarity with surgical suite maintenance and GLP requirements.\nExceptional organizational, observational, and communication skills.\nAbility to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.\nCommitment to maintaining compliance with regulatory standards and facility policies.\nResponsibilities:\nAdminister medications and substances by injection, orally, or topically.\nMonitor anesthesia and assist with surgical procedures.\nPerform euthanasia in compliance with applicable regulations.\nSupport radiographic and surgical procedures.\nCollect blood and other bio samples as required.\nMaintain animal medical records, including Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)-compliant entries.\nConduct routine health checks and ensure the handling and restraint of animals are conducted safely and humanely.\nEnsure proper maintenance of the surgical suite and learn additional relevant skills.\nWork collaboratively with research teams and provide technical expertise.\nEnsure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, Public Law 99-158, Army Regulation 40-33, and applicable accreditation standards (e.g., AAALAC).\nWork Environment and Physical Requirements:\nWork involves prolonged periods in auditory and physical isolation, including ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 containment areas.\nExposure to hazardous infectious agents, biohazards, and other laboratory risks.\nPhysical duties include standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and handling animals in various containment
