ATS provides world-leading automation tooling to the nuclear energy sector for new reactor builds, refurbishment, operations and maintenance.\nAbout the Role\nAs a Junior Systems Design Engineer - Nuclear, you will play a key role in the design and delivery of complex, high-reliability engineered systems supporting advanced nuclear and regulated industrial applications. Working as part of a multidisciplinary project team, you will help translate customer and regulatory requirements into robust system designs, gaining hands-on exposure to the full system lifecycle-from early concept development through detailed design, integration, testing, and commissioning. This role offers the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of customer processes and technology while contributing to solutions where safety, quality, and performance are critical.\nThis position is well suited for an early-career engineer who is eager to grow technical depth and systems thinking capability in a highly collaborative environment. You will be supported by experienced engineers while progressively building ownership of system requirements, technical risk mitigation, and verification activities. Through direct involvement in design reviews, analysis, proof-of-principle testing, and on-site support, you will develop into a trusted technical contributor and subject matter expert, helping deliver innovative, compliant, and reliable systems that make a real-world impact.\nSpecific Responsibilities\nSupports the Development of System Requirements Definition and Verification\nAssist in the development, documentation, and maintenance of system-level requirements, including functional, technical, and regulatory requirements.\nSupport requirements flow-down to subsystems, components, and third-party equipment under the guidance of senior engineers.\nParticipate in requirements verification planning and execution, including analysis, testing, and inspection activities.\nAssist with the preparation and execution of acceptance testing activities such as proof-of-principle testing, factory acceptance testing, and site acceptance testing.\nEvaluate design outputs (drawings, calculations, specifications, and test results) for conformance to defined requirements.\nSupport the preparation of technical documentation such as verification matrices, test plans, and acceptance test reports.\nAssist in the identification and mitigation of technical risks through structured problem-solving and design validation activities.\nSubject Matter Expertise\nLearn and develop an understanding of customer processes, system functionality, and applicable nuclear and industrial standards.\nSupport system-level and component-level analysis and calculations, such as functional capability, accuracy, structural considerations, pressure/flow, heat transfer, and reliability, as applicable.\nAssist in the preparation of technical studies, calculations, and design assessments to support system performance and compliance.\nSupport the development of risk assessments, including Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEAs) and Safety Risk Assessments.\nAssist with proof-of-principle studies and hands-on testing to validate design assumptions and reduce technical risk.\nDevelop familiarity with applicable codes, standards, quality requirements, and regulatory expectations relevant to nuclear and high-reliability systems.\nWork Cross-Functionally with Other Teams\nWork collaboratively with mechanical, electrical, controls, software, assembly, and project management teams to support system design and execution.\nParticipate in internal and customer design reviews, contribute technical input and learn best practices for design evaluation.\nSupport coordination with third-party vendors of process-critical equipment, including review of technical specifications and participation in acceptance testing.\nAssist with system integration, startup, commissioning, and buy-off activities, including on-site support when required.\nCommunicate technical information clearly and effectively within the project team and with customers, with support from senior engineers.\nAdditional Responsibilities\nFirst-of-a-kind development efforts, continuous improvement initiatives, and product or process enhancements.\nAssist with problem identification and resolution across multiple engineering disciplines.\nFollow established engineering processes, quality requirements, and health and safety procedures.\nSupport the preparation of technical inputs for project planning, execution strategies, and estimates as required.\nParticipate in customer meetings and support resolution of technical or project-related issues.\nPerform other engineering duties or project tasks as assigned, consistent with a junior-level development role.\nQualifications\nEducation:\nAssociate’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Design Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Engineering Physics, Engineering Science, or a related engineering discipline is preferred.\nAcademic exposure to systems engineering principles, design methodology, analysis, and verification is preferred.\nCoursework or project experience related to nuclear, energy, regulated industries, or high-reliability systems is considered an asset.\nExperience:\nEarly-career experience (internship, co-op, or entry-level role) supporting mechanical, electrical, controls, or systems engineering activities.\nFundamental understanding of engineering design, analysis, and structured problem-solving methodologies.\nExposure to requirements definition, technical documentation, or verification and validation activities is an asset.\nAbility to support basic engineering calculations, analyses, and studies under guidance, such as functional performance, accuracy, structural considerations, or process capability.\nFamiliarity with interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents.\nHands-on interest or experience in testing, prototyping, proof-of-principle activities, or system integration support is preferred.\nWorking knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for technical documentation and communication.\nNuclear-Related Knowledge\nInterest in developing expertise in nuclear, regulated, or safety-critical systems and environments.\nWillingness to learn and work within applicable codes, standards, quality programs, and regulatory requirements.\nAbility and willingness to support work in controlled or regulated environments, including on-site support as required.\nJoin our globally growing team at ATS Industrial Automation
