You’ll take ownership of complex features and projects, guiding them from concept to delivery while ensuring technical excellence and alignment with team objectives.\nWhile your primary focus will remain within your team, you may occasionally take on project lead responsibilities-coordinating efforts, aligning timelines, and ensuring successful delivery in collaboration with product and design partners. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:\nLead the design and development of scalable, high-quality software solutions that align with business goals and technical strategy.\nTake ownership of complex features and projects, guiding them from planning through implementation, testing, and deployment.\nCollaborate with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to define technical requirements and ensure successful project delivery.\nContribute to architectural discussions and decisions, working closely with principal engineers and architects to ensure consistency and long-term maintainability.\nServe as a technical mentor to junior and mid-level engineers, providing guidance, sharing knowledge, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.\nConduct and lead code reviews, promoting best practices in code quality, testing, and maintainability.\nTroubleshoot and resolve complex application and integration issues, contributing to root cause analysis and long-term solutions.\nActively participate in all phases of Avalon’s Agile Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including sprint planning, backlog refinement, and retrospectives.\nOccasionally take on project lead responsibilities, coordinating technical efforts within the team and ensuring alignment with timelines and deliverables.\nDemonstrate a strong understanding of how technical solutions support business operations and contribute to strategic goals.\nBuild and apply deep domain knowledge of health plan operations and related systems to inform technical decisions.\nParticipate in the on-call rotation to support critical software systems, demonstrating leadership and accountability for production stability.\nSoftware Engineer III - Minimum Qualifications:\nTechnical Skills\nAdvanced proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Java, Go, or TypeScript, with a strong focus on writing clean, maintainable, and scalable code.\nDeep understanding of relational and non-relational databases, with experience optimizing complex queries and contributing to data modeling decisions.\nExpert-level experience with Git and source control workflows, including managing complex merges, resolving conflicts, and guiding branching strategies.\nProficient in configuring and optimizing development environments and tooling to support team productivity and consistency.\nStrong experience designing and integrating web services and APIs, including RESTful and event-driven architectures; familiarity with service versioning, security, and documentation standards.\nComfortable working in Linux-based environments, with the ability to automate tasks, troubleshoot system-level issues, and support deployment pipelines.\nDeep understanding of Agile methodologies and the full SDLC, with experience leading technical discussions during sprint planning, retrospectives, and backlog refinement.\nHands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI, including pipeline design, testing strategies, and deployment automation.\nPractical experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, including deployment, scaling, and monitoring of services.\nStrong grasp of secure coding practices, performance optimization, and system reliability principles.\nDemonstrated ability to mentor and support the growth of junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, learning, and technical excellence.\nExperience contributing to or influencing architectural decisions in partnership with principal engineers and architects.\nSoft Skills\nExcellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, including engineers, product managers, and leadership.\nProven ability to collaborate effectively within a cross-functional team, while also influencing technical direction and decision-making within the team.\nDemonstrates initiative and autonomy in identifying opportunities for improvement, driving solutions, and following through to execution.\nOpen to feedback and skilled at delivering constructive feedback to peers in a way that promotes growth, learning, and team cohesion.\nStrong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and resolve complex technical challenges.\nConsistently demonstrates ownership and accountability for delivering high-quality, maintainable, and scalable solutions.\nActively mentors junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of inclusion, learning, and continuous improvement. \nComfortable stepping into informal leadership roles, such as guiding technical discussions or coordinating efforts on team-level initiatives.\nSoftware Engineer III -
