We’re looking for a Staff/Principal Software Engineer to help define and build the technology needed to scale, integrate with Phreesia, simplify customer onboarding, and deliver product improvements faster and more reliably.\nWhat You’ll Spend Your Time Doing\nYou will join a small team responsible for defining the technical direction of our financing products and bringing that direction to life. Working closely with engineering, product, and business leadership, you will determine what to retain, modernize, or rebuild and lead that work through production. This is a hands-on role spanning architecture, software development, and quality engineering, with AI-assisted development central to how you deliver. You will help establish the engineering practices that support the team as it grows. You will get to:\nGuide architecture and contribute hands-on development across front-end applications, back-end services, data systems, and integrations. \nLead and execute complex engineering initiatives from problem definition and technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production validation. Break substantial changes into achievable increments with clear outcomes and manageable risk. \nBuild financial workflows and journaled systems to preserve data accuracy, integrity, traceability, and auditability. \nAssess existing systems and make practical decisions about what to retain, modernize, or replace, balancing business value, delivery speed, reliability, and long-term maintainability. \nUse AI coding tools to investigate systems, explore solutions, implement changes, refactor code, and develop tests. Review and validate generated work, taking responsibility for its correctness, security, and maintainability. \nYou Are\nSelf-directed and comfortable taking ownership of complex hands-on work in an environment that gives you both freedom and responsibility. \nStrong at understanding business needs and how technical decisions affect product outcomes, business performance, and go-to-market execution. \nAdept at translating business and product objectives into technical solutions, evaluating tradeoffs across cost, delivery timelines, risk, and maintainability. \nAble to anticipate business and technical needs beyond the immediate requirements and design forward-thinking solutions without adding unnecessary complexity. \nSomeone who takes pride in their work, takes responsibility for its quality, and looks for ways to improve it. \nComfortable discussing complex technical and business problems with colleagues across the company from fellow engineers to the product and sales teams to the CEO. Able to explain the technical direction, risks, and tradeoffs clearly, understand different perspectives, and help people reach informed decisions. \nExperienced in using AI coding tools to deliver working software, with the judgment to identify incorrect assumptions, challenge generated solutions, and independently verify their behavior. \nWhat Makes You a Great Fit\nYou don't need to check every box - but this role will feel energizing if you:\nDemonstrated experience rebuilding or substantially modernizing an established production platform, including making architectural decisions and transitioning existing customers, data, or business workflows. \nExperience with both front-end and back-end product development, with depth in one or more areas. \nHighly proficient in working with relational databases such as MS-SQL, Postgres, or MySQL. \nFamiliar with designing cloud-native solutions including their deployment needs. \nExperienced in software testing practices and validating complex business workflows. \nYou will encounter and work with\nC#, modern .NET, and PHP \nHTML, CSS, and React \nAzure and/or AWS \nMS-SQL, MySql, MongoDB, and Cosmos, and MongoDB \nAgentic coding tools (OpenAI Codex, Claude Code) \nBonus Skills\nHave experience with financial systems, or systems which require high data accuracy. \nHave previously developed and operated software in a highly regulated environment. \nExperience with distributed messaging systems including message queues such RabbitMQ or Amazon SQS, or event streaming platforms such as Kafka or Apache Pulsar \nWe Do Have A Few Requirements To Check\nBachelor's degree required \n10+ years of software engineering experience using .NET, Java, or similar languages including experience leading complex technical initiatives. \nWhere You’ll Work\nThis is a remote role within the United States\nCompensation & Rewards\nTotal Compensation: USD $275,000 - $325,000 USD (Base + Variable) \n\nA Comprehensive Total Rewards package designed to support your whole life - not just your work\nWho We Are\nAt Phreesia, we’re looking for smart and passionate people to help drive our mission of creating a better, more engaging healthcare experience.
