This role serves as a technical leader on complex projects, partnering closely with Product Management, Quality Assurance, DevOps, and other engineering teams to deliver high-quality software that meets customer and business needs.\nThe successful candidate will contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis and architecture through implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing support. This role also helps drive technical innovation, mentors engineers, and promotes engineering best practices across the organization.\nEssential Job Duties\nSoftware Architecture & Development\nAnalyze product and business requirements and translate them into technical specifications and software designs.\nDesign, develop, test, and deploy high-quality software solutions using modern software engineering principles and practices.\nLead technical design discussions and provide architectural guidance for new features and products.\nWrite clean, maintainable, scalable, and well-documented code.\nParticipate in code reviews and promote best practices for software development.\nTroubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across applications and services.\nCollaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful delivery of software products.\nTechnical Leadership\nProvide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level software engineers.\nInfluence technical direction and contribute to engineering standards, processes, and best practices.\nEvaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions that improve product performance, scalability, security, and maintainability.\nDrive continuous improvement initiatives within the software engineering organization.\nProject Execution\nParticipate in project planning, estimation, and risk assessment activities.\nProvide regular status updates on project work, milestones, dependencies, and technical risks.\nBalance multiple priorities while meeting project timelines and quality expectations.\nQuality & Testing\nPartner with Software Quality Assurance teams to define testing strategies and acceptance criteria.\nSupport automated testing, continuous integration, and continuous deployment initiatives.\nEnsure software solutions meet performance, reliability, security, and maintainability standards.\nCustomer & Product Support\nAssist technical support teams with complex product issues and root cause analysis.\nParticipate in product beta testing and customer investigations when required.\nProvide technical expertise during critical customer escalations.\nDocumentation\nCreate and maintain technical specifications, architecture documentation, design documents, and other engineering artifacts.\nDocument software features, APIs, and system integrations to support ongoing maintenance and future development.\nAdditional Responsibilities\nMaintain confidentiality of company intellectual property and customer information.\nPerform other duties as assigned.\nQualifications\nRequired\nBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related STEM field.\n7+ years of professional software development experience.\nExperience designing and developing commercial software applications.\nStrong proficiency in one or more modern programming languages such as Python, C#, Java, JavaScript, or similar.\nExperience with cloud-based platforms and distributed systems.\nAgentic mindset with a proven track record of leveraging AI coding tools- such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or OpenAI Codex - to meaningfully accelerate delivery, not just as a novelty but as a core part of your workflow\nExperience working within Agile software development environments.\nStrong understanding of software architecture, object-oriented design, testing methodologies, and source control systems.\nExcellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.\nPreferred\nExperience with AWS, Azure, or other cloud platforms.\nExperience developing SaaS, IoT, analytics, or data-driven applications.\nExperience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.\nExperience mentoring engineers or serving as a technical lead.\nExperience working with scalable, high-availability systems.\nAnnual target salary for this role is $155,000-$160,000\nCompetitive Total Rewards at Badger Meter:\nCompetitive Pay\n\nAnnual Bonus\n\nEligible for Annual Pay Increases\n\nComprehensive Health, Vision, and Dental Coverage\n\n15 days Paid Time Off + 11 Paid Holidays\n\nTwo Ways to Save for Retirement: Badger Meter contributes 25 cents for every dollar you contribute to the plan, up to 7% of your eligible compensation.
