DevOps Engineers may help teams test, integrate and operationalise new approaches, creating reliable engineering foundations through which ideas can be assessed and moved towards practical use.\nMission Operations\nMission Operations focuses on the dependable operation and continued improvement of capabilities in service. DevOps Engineers may support platform reliability, monitoring, incident and change processes, workload management and the reduction of repetitive operational effort through automation.\nAcross these SubAccounts, the common purpose is clear: use sound engineering to help people deliver and sustain technology on which important missions depend.\nWhat You Will Be Doing\nYour responsibilities will vary according to your grade, experience and project. They may include:\nDesigning, building and maintaining automation for the integration, testing, deployment and operation of software and infrastructure.\nDeveloping and improving continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines.\nCreating repeatable ways to configure, deploy, scale and manage application workloads.\nBuilding and maintaining public or private cloud environments.\nDeploying and operating containerised applications and orchestration platforms.\nApplying configuration management and source-control practices to infrastructure, application and deployment artefacts.\nConfiguring, hardening and maintaining operating systems and infrastructure.\nUsing programming or scripting to remove repetitive work, improve consistency and support reliable delivery.\nDiagnosing issues across infrastructure, applications, networks and databases, then working with the appropriate specialists to identify root causes.\nEmbedding security throughout development and operational processes.\nSupporting capabilities in operational environments through monitoring, maintenance, service requests, incident management and controlled change.\nApplying Site Reliability Engineering principles to improve availability, resilience and supportability.\nProducing proportionate architecture and technical documentation using relevant patterns, practices and frameworks.\nWorking as part of a multidisciplinary Agile team and contributing constructively to planning, reviews and other team activities.\nSharing knowledge within the project and across the wider engineering community.\nSupporting and guiding colleagues where appropriate to the grade and scope of the position.\nThis role is not limited to one part of the delivery lifecycle. You will help teams consider how technology will be built, deployed, secured, operated and improved.\nEssential Skills\nWe are looking for evidence of capability in DevOps, platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, Site Reliability Engineering or a closely related discipline.\nYou should be able to demonstrate experience in several of the following areas:\nBuilding or maintaining continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines.\nAutomating infrastructure, software delivery or operational processes through code or scripting.\nConfiguring and managing at least one public or private cloud platform.\nConfiguring, hardening or maintaining at least one operating system.\nWorking with a containerisation platform and an associated orchestration tool.\nApplying source control and configuration-management practices.\nSupporting application deployment and understanding dependencies between applications and their underlying infrastructure.\nDiagnosing technical problems across one or more of infrastructure, application code, networking and databases.\nApplying security considerations during development, deployment and operation.\nWorking with established infrastructure or legacy technology where modernisation is incremental rather than immediate.\nContributing within an Agile or Scrum delivery environment.\nApplying, or demonstrating an understanding of, Site Reliability Engineering principles.\nCommunicating technical information clearly and working effectively with colleagues from different disciplines.\nSharing knowledge and adapting your approach when requirements, technology or operational circumstances change.\nThe depth and breadth expected will be proportionate to the grade. You do not need experience in every area to apply.
