HV Substation Team Leader, you will lead a team of Primary Design Engineers and CAD Technicians, ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality engineering solutions and technical documentation.\nYou will provide technical leadership across HV substation projects, support the development of junior engineers, and act as a key point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders. \nYou will also support business development activities by contributing technical input to tender submissions and helping secure future project opportunities.\nWhy This Role:\nWork on progress through the full lifecycle, from concept and design through to construction and energisation.\nKey Responsibilities:\nTechnical Leadership\nLead the delivery of primary engineering design for HV substation projects up to 400kV.\nManage and mentor a team of engineers and CAD technicians.\nEnsure the quality, accuracy and consistency of project deliverables.\nSupport and develop junior engineers through coaching and technical guidance.\nProvide technical oversight and approval of engineering work.\nTake ownership of HV Plant CDAE responsibilities on National Grid projects where applicable.\nDesign & Engineering\nPrepare, review and approve:\nPrimary layouts and elevations.\nSingle Line Diagrams (SLDs).\nTransformer sizing and specifications.\nGIS and AIS switchgear designs.\nShunt reactors, NERs and reactive/capacitive compensation schemes.\nSwitchroom layouts.\nCT sizing calculations.\nBusbar design and short-circuit force calculations.\nBusbar and connector specifications.\nLVAC systems for substations.\nEarthing studies and earth return current calculations.\nInsulation coordination studies.\nMechanical interlocking schemes.\nEquipment technical specifications.\nType registration documentation.\nFactory Acceptance Testing (FAT) activities.\nProject Delivery\nManage programme, budget and quality requirements for engineering deliverables.\nPrepare, review and approve feasibility studies, outline designs, detailed designs and technical reports.\nReview and approve construction drawings and technical documentation.\nCoordinate internal teams and external suppliers.\nSupport bid and tender submissions.\nMaintain updates to the Business Development Tracker.\nParticipate in client meetings, design reviews and technical workshops.\nAbout You:\nYou will be an experienced HV Substation Engineer with a strong technical background and a passion for delivering high-quality engineering solutions.\nYou will have:\nSignificant experience delivering primary design and engineering for HV substation projects up to 400kV.\nStrong knowledge of UK Transmission and Distribution standards and specifications.\nExcellent communication and stakeholder management skills.\nExperience leading engineering teams and reviewing technical deliverables.\nThe ability to work independently while supporting and developing others.\nA proactive and collaborative approach to problem-solving.\nEssential Requirements\nBEng or BSc in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.\nExtensive experience in HV substation primary design and engineering.\nExperience producing designs, calculations, reports and drawings associated with substation projects up to 400kV.\nStrong understanding of IEC standards and industry best practice.\nExperience working to National Grid and DNO specifications.\nExperience managing engineering teams and coordinating project delivery.\nExperience working alongside CAD technicians using AutoCAD, Revit or similar software.\nDesirable Requirements\nMEng or MSc in Electrical Engineering.\nNational Grid HV Plant CDAE accreditation.\nChartered Engineer
