BakerHicks is a design, engineering and project delivery company based in Warwick, England, and part of the Morgan Sindall Group, working across infrastructure, life sciences and industry, and public and government sectors. Its teams design power transmission and distribution networks, high-voltage substations and overhead lines, highways, rail, aviation, pharmaceutical and advanced manufacturing facilities, data centres, defence and healthcare buildings, with offices in the UK, Ireland, Switzerland and Germany. It hires civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and high-voltage engineers, Revit and CAD technicians, project managers and graduate engineers, including contract roles.

BakerHicks is looking for a Senior Civil Engineer to support our Highways team, taking a lead role in delivering high-quality civil engineering design across a range of projects. This is a civil engineering design role focused on preparing and delivering technical packages, applying sound engineering principles and working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

You will have a strong track record of undertaking civil engineering design and delivering project packages for approval, both independently and as part of a team. You will be confident managing your own technical work, contributing to project delivery and supporting the development of less experienced engineers.

Can you prepare drainage, earthworks and utility infrastructure designs as part of a typical site development or highway package? Do you understand how to select appropriate pavement designs for different loading requirements, taking account of the ground conditions? Are you experienced in organising and procuring surveys to inform designs and reviewing their outputs? Do you understand the different challenges involved in delivering civil engineering designs in urban and rural environments?

These are some of the challenges our team works through, and we’re looking for an engineer who can bring their technical expertise, practical thinking and problem-solving skills to the table.

If you enjoy applying engineering theory, introducing innovative and sustainable solutions, working with Autodesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD, and supporting and developing junior engineers, this could be your next step.

You will ideally be Chartered, Incorporated or nearing either level of professional registration, with experience delivering a variety of small and medium-sized projects and potentially managing individual design packages within larger projects.

This role can be based in our Warwick, Derby or London offices.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and deliver civil engineering design packages, including drawings, specifications, technical calculations and reports.
  • Develop civil engineering solutions covering drainage, earthworks, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), pavements and utilities.
  • Obtain technical and regulatory approvals for design packages.
  • Identify and implement practical, innovative solutions to overcome engineering challenges.
  • Manage small project teams and coordinate civil engineering deliverables within multidisciplinary projects.
  • Champion quality assurance and technical compliance throughout project delivery.
  • Prepare and review technical models, calculations and design outputs.
  • Review subcontractor drawings for technical compliance.
  • Support tender submissions, fee proposals and project reporting.
  • Incorporate sustainable and practical design solutions into project work.
  • Mentor and support the development of engineers, graduates and apprentices.
  • Provide occasional construction-stage support when required.

What You’ll Bring

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, supported by evidence of continued professional development.
  • Chartered, Incorporated or nearing Chartership or professional registration through a relevant institution, such as ICE, CIHT or IHE.
  • Demonstrable experience in civil engineering design, particularly drainage, earthworks, SuDS, pavements and utilities.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD.
  • Experience using civil engineering design software, including drainage design and modelling packages such as InfoDrainage, MicroDrainage, Causeway Flow, Causeway PDS or InfoWorks ICM, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of Section 38, Section 278 and Section 104 agreements, together with relevant UK adoption standards.
  • A solid understanding of current UK technical standards, publications, guidance, best practice and legislative requirements.
  • Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Eligibility to obtain the required security clearance.
  • A full, clean UK driving licence.
