Banco Santander is a Spanish bank founded in 1857 in the port city that gives it its name, and it is now the largest bank in the eurozone by market value. Its unusual feature is geography: rather than concentrating at home it runs full retail banks in Spain, the United Kingdom, Poland, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Argentina, with a large United States consumer finance business alongside them. Headquartered in Madrid and listed there and in New York, it has been consolidating those national banks onto shared technology platforms and has built the digital bank Openbank as a pan-European deposit channel.
