Bank of America is an American bank whose oldest predecessor was founded in San Francisco in 1904 as the Bank of Italy to serve immigrant depositors other banks would not take. Its present scale comes from the 1998 merger with NationsBank of Charlotte and the crisis-era acquisitions of Countrywide and Merrill Lynch, and it now runs consumer banking, global wealth and investment management through Merrill and the private bank, global banking for corporate clients, and global markets. Headquartered in Charlotte and listed on the New York Stock Exchange, it is one of the four largest banks in the United States by assets and deposits.
