Leads and manages the provision of specialized and advanced wealth planning, guidance and counsel to BMO’s Personal Wealth Distribution businesses (Private Wealth Canada). Leverages extensive experience in leading planning professionals and utilizes deep technical planning expertise to motivate and challenge a team of advanced planning professionals with expertise in tax, estate and trust, business advisory & succession planning and philanthropy. Provides advanced planning services to HNW and UHNW clients and supports all frontline professionals who are delivering planning within Personal Wealth ensuring they have access to ongoing resources, tools and systems to assist in complex planning issues. Develops a strategy to ensure BMO has leading and competitive capabilities in specialized planning to meet the complex and comprehensive needs of HNW and UHNW clients. Leads a centre of expertise, building and executing BMO’s strategy to be a thought leader internally and externally around wealth planning across North America. Develops and leads the distribution and sales support strategy to ensure specialized planning knowledge is leveraged by the other professionals within the function and frontline professionals. Develops and drives the strategic plan for the delivery of best in class specialized wealth planning services and sets the groundwork to ensure the needs of HNW and UHNW clients are optimally met by partnering with lead relationship managers in WM and other LoBs, and where appropriate other external professionals and Centres of Influence. Collaborate across BMO to identify cross LOB business opportunities leveraging specialized planning team.

  • Become the growth engine of Private Wealth Canada by identifying significant wealth management opportunities such as investment, insurance, trust, lending and other revenue sources through holistic sophisticated wealth planning delivery engagements.

  • Provides overall leadership and strategic direction to the Specialized Wealth Planning Team by setting context and direction, defining accountabilities, tasks and assignments and establishing boundaries for decision-making and approvals.

  • Coaches, motivates, develops and evaluates performance of specialized planning leaders and provides guidance and mentoring to those direct reports in the resolution of complex issues

  • Establishes and maintains a sales management process to ensure opportunities for portfolio growth and profile enhancement are maximized including: maximizing the expertise of internal partners; establishing and strengthening relationships with other sales forces; recognizing referral opportunities to BMO Financial Group partners

  • Partners with key groups such as NA Commercial Banking to identify cross business referral opportunities through leveraging specialized resources. Partners with colleagues in the U.S. , if required, to ensure cross border planning expertise is being leveraged to meet clients’ North American planning needs.

  • Ensures consistent communication of strategy and messaging between Enterprise Wealth Planning and the LOBs

  • Hold employees accountable to their business/sales plans; conducts thorough performance assessments; coaches and provides candid feedback; ensures alignment of rewards to objectives, alignment with team and to BMO Financial Group values

  • Instills collaborative approach to ensure team members partner with colleagues in Enterprise Wealth Planning and across BMO Financial Group in providing financial solutions to clients

  • Partners with Wealth Planning Leaders and Market Leaders to recruit, develop and promote a high performing planning team in order to provide the leadership and bench strength necessary over the long-term to meet Wealth Managements strategic business and growth objectives

  • Partners with market leadership to ensure each market has access to the specific specialized planning support required

  • Develops talent strategy and ongoing pipeline for specialized planning professionals for Personal Wealth

  • Leads the development and guides the implementation of the strategy to provide advanced and specialized planning advice and services within Wealth Management

  • Partners with the Wealth Management leadership to develop the engagement and delivery model of overall planning support for high value clients

  • Assesses and approves external experts qualified to provide advisors with tax and estate planning services

  • Provides front line sales force with accurate and detailed subject matter expertise in all areas of wealth management

  • Serves as in-house expert in providing financial planning support on technical issues in the areas of investment planning, education planning, retirement planning and transition planning, with general knowledge of estate planning, personal taxation and insurance.

  • Promotes the services of the HNW Consulting & Financial Planning strategy of technical experts across Personal Wealth

  • Ensures team is knowledgeable on wealth products and services (including advice content, process and tools) and have a general understanding of the products and services across BMO Financial Group and its partners

  • Provides SME and thought leadership regarding selection/development of tools and technology platforms to be utilized by wealth planning professionals

  • Contributes to the building of the Enterprise Centre of Expertise for Wealth Planning (processes, workflow, delivery strategy), specifically in terms of the HNW and UHNW client segments for BMO Personal Wealth

  • Establishes baselines and KPIs for measuring planning performance such as client penetration metrics, number of plans completed, client satisfaction surveys, retention statistics, plan quality metrics, etc.

  • Provides insight and share expertise with team members for advanced financial planning concepts, such as, succession planning and philanthropy and other complex wealth services offerings.

  • Provides oversight and handles all escalations from team on complex deals, provide insight and direction to team members, experts and IAs on best course of action

  • Partners with all Wealth Management discipline heads and other partners across BMO Financial Group to provide a broad-based solutions approach for specific client situations.

  • Partners with distribution leadership to develop local strategies to increase adoption of wealth planning and increase number households with financial plans

  • Develops internal and external networks and referrals sources to ensure the ongoing growth of the Wealth Management business to achieve identified targets

  • Demonstrates a consultative and collaborative selling approach in customer conversations, acting as a member of a client team, to facilitate the desired Wealth Management client experience and to achieve business goals

  • Provides proactive, integrated, and customized advice and creates and implements wealth planning strategies to help clients achieve their financial and personal goals

  • Protects BMO Financial Group’s assets by adhering to all banking, investment and lending regulations (as appropriate), Policies and Procedures, legal and ethical requirements, process requirements, BMO Financial Group guidelines and established risk guidelines

  • Build the framework for an effective quality review process of plans delivered.

  • Adhere to and maintain professional designations as per Regulatory bodies

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education, preferably with business orientation; MBA an asset

  • 10+ years of experience providing financial planning services or advice as a senior financial planner

  • Strong business acumen with the ability to connect planning activity to client acquisition, client retention, revenue growth, share of wallet and ROE.

  • Strategic, enterprise-minded leader who can set direction, simplify complexity and translate strategy into clear execution.

  • Change leadership capability, including the ability to drive adoption, shift behaviours, challenge legacy practices and sustain momentum across a national business.

  • Canadian Securities Course or higher securities industry designation

  • CA/CPA, CGA/CMA, LLB/LL.L/LL.M or other professional wealth designations an asset

  • CLU, R.F.P., CSWP, TED, FCSI, FMA, CIM designations

  • CFP Designation required and/or Personal Financial Planner designation (ICB)

  • Experience managing a team of advanced planning professionals

  • Knowledge of financial planning principles and standards

  • Specific knowledge of Taxation, Estates, Trust and Insurance

  • Possess broad and diverse knowledge of the investment business and the Bank’s overall products, services, systems and distribution channels

  • Financial services sales experience

  • Exceptional relationship management, sales and service orientation

  • Strong Interpersonal skills and managerial leadership skills

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to clearly communicate complex planning advice issues in a comprehensive and practical manner

  • Influencing skills (uses direct and indirect strategies to persuade and provide advice)
