Barclays is a British universal bank whose roots go back to a goldsmith banking partnership founded in London in 1690, and which took its modern joint-stock form in 1896 through the amalgamation of twenty family banks. The group also runs Barclaycard, one of the largest card issuers in Britain, a United States consumer bank built on airline and retail partnerships, and a private banking and wealth arm.
