Job Description

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Accountabilities

• Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
• Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
• Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
• Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
• Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
• Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

Join us as a Real-Time Data Engineer at Barclays where you will help drive the evolution of our data engineering capabilities across real-time and streaming platforms. You will use modern engineering practices and scalable data technologies to build robust, secure, and high-performing data pipelines that support critical business and client outcomes.

This role is ideal for someone with strong engineering fundamentals and hands-on experience building real-time and large-scale data pipelines. You will work on systems that ingest, transform, and distribute high-volume event data with a strong focus on reliability, observability, performance, and operational resilience.

To be successful as a Software Engineer you must have the following essential skills:

• Strong hands-on experience building data pipelines and streaming solutions using Python, PySpark, Spark Structured Streaming, or similar technologies.
• Solid understanding of distributed data processing concepts, including event ordering, partitioning, consumer groups, stateful processing, and delivery guarantees.
• Experience working with real-time data platforms and messaging technologies such as Kafka, Pulsar, Kinesis, Flink, or related streaming frameworks.
• Experience with version control and engineering workflows using Git and GitLab, including support for CI/CD and controlled release processes.
• Experience operating production-grade, low-latency data systems with a focus on resilience, observability, recovery, and data quality.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

• Experience with Databricks or similar modern data engineering platforms.

• Proficiency in Spark SQL or similar technologies for large-scale data transformation and querying.
• Good working knowledge of Java, Scala, or other languages commonly used in distributed data engineering environments.
• Understanding of real-time and streaming data processing concepts, including replay, idempotency, backpressure, and recovery.
• Experience in financial services, payments, trading, or other regulated environments where correctness, control, and auditability are critical.
