Summary:
The Refrigeration Technician is responsible for assisting with the refurbishment of existing units, customization of new units, assembly, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of industrial refrigeration equipment and related systems. This position is designed for an individual who is interested in developing skills and a career in refrigeration, HVAC, electrical, mechanical assembly, or industrial maintenance.
Under the direction and training of experienced technicians and supervisors, the employee will learn to work with refrigeration components including evaporators, condensing units, chillers, compressors, coolers, freezers, and related electrical and mechanical controls.
This position also serves as a customer interface and technical resource, assisting installers, customers, and other individuals with questions regarding the installation, configuration, and basic troubleshooting of refrigeration units. The employee is expected to communicate clearly and professionally and to work effectively with both technical and non-technical individuals.
The position will also assist with general production, shipping, maintenance, and material-handling activities as needed. Previous refrigeration experience is helpful but not required. On-the-job training will be provided.
Essential Functions:
- Assist experienced technicians with the refurbishment of existing units, customization of new units, assembly, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration systems and components.
- Learn to identify and work with evaporators, condensers, condensing units, chillers, compressors, coolers, freezers, piping, and related components.
- Use hand tools, power tools, measuring equipment, and other equipment safely and properly.
- Assist with fabricating and assembling structural and functional components of refrigeration systems.
- Assist with cutting, bending, threading, and connecting pipe and tubing.
- Assist with brazing, soldering, and making repairs to joints and connections as directed and trained.
- Assist with testing refrigeration lines, components, and connections for leaks.
- Assist with dismantling systems and inspecting mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components.
- Assist with replacing worn or defective parts and reassembling equipment.
- Assist with electrical control wiring and basic troubleshooting under the direction of qualified personnel.
- Learn to analyze the mechanical operation of refrigeration units and identify potential problems.
- Assist with refrigerant recovery and handling in accordance with applicable EPA regulations and company procedures.
- Work toward obtaining required EPA Refrigerant Certification as training and job responsibilities progress.
- Communicate equipment problems, safety concerns, and other issues to the Production Supervisor or lead technician.
- Build and mount refrigeration units on pallets or frames for shipping.
- Assist with preparing products and equipment for shipment.
- Assist with loading and unloading incoming and outgoing shipments.
- Cut and prepare packaging materials for products being shipped.
- Monitor materials and equipment for scrap and assist with proper dismantling and disposal.
- Provide technical assistance and information to customers, installers, and other end users regarding the installation, configuration, and basic troubleshooting of refrigeration units.
- Communicate technical information in a clear and understandable manner and adapt communication and guidance to both technical and non-technical individuals.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and instructions.
- Be willing to learn new skills and assist in different areas of the company as needed.
- Maintain positive and professional communication with supervisors, coworkers, and other employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to fumes, dust, airborne particles, noise, and mechanical equipment. Work is primarily performed in a heated and air-conditioned shop with engineering controls in place for fume and particulate recovery.
Employees are expected to follow all required safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Physical Demands:
This position is active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, twisting, crouching, pulling, reaching, and climbing throughout the workday.
The employee must frequently lift and move items weighing up to 35 pounds. The position may occasionally require working in awkward positions or assisting with the movement and positioning of equipment and components using appropriate lifting devices.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. Work will be performed Monday through Thursday, 6:30am to 4:30pm, 40 hours per week. Occasional overtime may be required as job duties demand.
Required Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Trade school, technical school, vocational training, or related coursework preferred.
- Previous experience with hand tools, power tools, mechanical assembly, construction, maintenance, HVAC, refrigeration, or manufacturing is a plus but not required.
- Ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical individuals
- Must have a willingness and ability to learn refrigeration, mechanical, and electrical skills.
- Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Must demonstrate a commitment to workplace safety.
- EPA Refrigerant Certification is not required at the time of hirebut may be required as the employee progresses in the position and assumes additional refrigeration responsibilities.
